Auto dimming rear view mirror

Featured Replies

Hi peeps,

My rear view mirror doesn't appear to be working, I think. When I press the button at the bottom, which turns it on I guess? A green light appears on the front of the mirror, however I don't think it's working as it doesn't appear to change at all and people that drive behind are still blinding me!

This is something I would like to get sorted now with the weather changing.

Where should I start?

Car is Mk2 Octavia 2005 Elegance estate if that helps?

Thanks in advance.

Yas

Looking at the current flow diagram there are quite a few connections to the mirror including:

  • the reversing light
  • the door contact switch
  • the instrument dimming control

It might be worth checking that all these are working correctly as it looks like they have some effect on the auto anti-dazzle mirror controller.

It generally doesn't change immediately and varies depending upon the light level in front of you as well. The way I test is to press the button so it is on and then cover the light sensor on the back of the mirror. You should then see itdarken

Just further to Skomaz, the sensor on the back is on the passenger side about 1cm from the bottom of the mirror and 2cm in, you will feel a dip/cut-out with your finger, cover that and shine a torch on the front sensor (next to the green light) and see if it tints. Can be done during the day that way so you can easily tell if its tinted rather than just guessing if its just dark outside :D

Thanks for the advice guys, i will try what Skomaz and Robt100 have suggested.

KevinST, I can confirm that those bits are working on mine.

I will feedback on here once i have tried the above.

Thanks

Yas

I do find mine isn't THAT sensitive, especially if its dusk or just low light. Only really does the job when its 'dark' dark. So sadly, DRLs and idiots with badly aligned headlights on in broad daylight wont be dimmed out

True - but what I find at dusk is that if I cover the front facing sensor briefly it dims and stays dimmed.

I've often thought about putting some 'magic tape' sellotape over the sensor as a light filter to help..

I was thinking the same, that or some kind of dark translucent sweet wrapper just to tint it a little more. Maybe we should do some experiments and see what's best :D

There're two sensors, one on the back cover facing front to sense if it's dark outside, and one right to the green indicator to sense if there is flash light coming from behind. What Robt100 suggested is the easiest way to test it.

Also, you'll have to dismantle the mirror if the green indicator is on but the mirror is not working. The outer wiring only provides power for the mirror.

Thanks again guys and I will try these at the weekend, however I feel that even though the mirror has power going to it, the mirror itself is probably faulty.
