Steering wheel vibration

Featured Replies

I experience vibration in my steering wheel when going 80 km/h or faster. The wheels seem okay (it goes straight forward when braking) so I am not sure what it is and if it is expensive.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you need to get the wheels balanced.

As what Paul said, start with the simple things.

If you don't want to pay for wheel balancing first, jack the car up and grab and try and move anything that doesn't move I.e. checking suspension components, especially those with bushes, don't move.

Is it under load, or does it continue regardless of throttle changes?

Or does it stop if youre turning ledt/right?

It vibrates harder when accelerating (as in I can actually feel it shaking my hands when accelerating at around 100 km/h) but when cruising (at 80 km/h) it is just slight vibration that isn't really noticeable until I remove a hand from the steering wheel. It get's worse with higher acceleration and in higher gear (IE vibrates harder at 4k rpms in 5fth than same RPM in 3rd or 4th). Haven't noticed it when turning.

Soon I'll change over to winter tires so I'll see if that does make a difference (if it does, then the previous wheels most likely need balancing)

If its while under load, good chance a cv joint may be worn/wearing out.

Mine has the same symptoms at the minute, but the vibration isnt until about 120-130kph, worst while in a straight line, eases off when on a right hand curve (motorway cruising speed... just ideal for head wrecking)

Hopefully getting a service this week so the cv's are going to get checked.if its them, ill let you know

Thanks :) My vibrations first started at 140 km/h, then started earlier and earlier.

By under load, do you mean when giving throttle?

Yup while giving throttle :)

So.. dragging this up again...

Had the old gurl serviced last night by my indy/ skoda dealer mechanic, and told him about the vibration issue. He examined as much as he could get at, reckoning drive shaft/cv joint, but couldnt see any wear etc. Anywhere under there that should be bringing it on??

So, tomorrow, im going to swap wheels front to rear, and see is it something tyre related as (in my mind) i only noticed it since the crap pirellis went on the front a few months back :/

Did he check that the driveshaft balance weights are solidly attached, and that you haven't thrown a wheel weight?

Hes going to have another look nexr week, but he couldnt see anything properly wrong.

ive had wheel weights missing before, this doesnt feel like that...

Flat spotted tyre is another possiblity.

But its only under load, at speed.. lift off and it stops and the same speed...

That points to a drive shaft issue.

That points to a drive shaft issue.

Thats what he reckons too... hes looking at it wednesday, after doing an insert for the boot lifter

So... i dunno if its just another gremlin or related, but yesterday there began a fairly horrible grinding/whining from the front end - while steering. Sounds very like PAS pump dying.. going for diagnosis tonight if i can, else tomorrow night

So.. a question... what is the fluid capacity of the powersteering?

I checked it a couple of weeks ago and it was quite low (my fault, sorta forgot about it as it had always been fine everytime i loked for the last 4yrs) so i topped it up about 1/4-1/3 litre which did over do it a bit.

just went for a look now, and the reservoir fairly empty - lower on stick than 3weeks ago. Chucked a 1/4 litre in, rolled steering around and then it took another 1/4litre. Its a bit over the max mark, but thats nearly a litre ive added in 3weeks. Need to drive it properly and see now though. Also cant see any obvious trails of fluid leaks etc

Scratch the last line.. after a drive there is clearly fluid being dumped somewhere.. from underneath its all over the wishbine end on drivers side. But the fluid level stayed up during the test drive. Gonna check it again later, but definitely going to be loked at later after the insert gets popped in for boot lifter

My steering rack is goosed...

Watch this space for the next updare tomorrow

Can't wait :o

Also, is it bad if you have too much power steering fluid? I accidentally filled a bit much and don't know how to get the excess out :/

Just get a syringe and suck it back out.

Im in negotiations regarding the next step :)

Negotiatoons concluded.. rack not my issue anymore....

I went over to winter wheels and no more issue with steering wheel vibration, gunned her to 140 km/h... no vibrations. So I guess the wheels were unbalanced. :)

I fixed my issue by Part Exing the Octavia against a 2009 opel insignia cdti 160bhp SE.. no more rack issues!
