Brake question - Fabia VRS

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have changed the brake discs and pads all round on the fabia vrs today. Being my first time i believe i've mad a few errors.

When retracting the brake pistons i didnt take the brake fluid filler cap off. My brake fluid has now risen above the max mark (its pretty much full)

Since noticing this i have took the filler cap off and pumped on the brake pedal to see if excess fluid would leave the reservoir, it hasnt. Since doing this when pumping the pedal (engine off, car stationary) the brake sounds slightly airated. Considering the reservoir is full i shouldnt have allowed air into the system though? I have taken the car for a drive and the brakes feel fine when driving, so i'm thinking i just haven't noticed this before and the pedal normally feels like this when stationary and with the engine off??

Will it be ok for me to drive tomorrow morning with the brake fluid too high? This would be until i get a suction pump to syphon it out? Otherwise in the meantime i'm thinking of getting as much out of the filler as i can using a clean rag to absorb it.

Thanks so much for your time

It'll be just fine, you haven't done anything wrong, relax.

Many thanks for your message. I'll drain it down to max anyway.

On another note in my kit I didn't receive new caliper guide pin bolts. So I've refitted the old ones without applying loctite (just found out this is recommended) do you think this will be okay or would you go back and apply some loctite?

Many thanks

They'll be fine, I never use loctite on the slider pins, only the carrier bolts.

Damn, I loosened the carrier bolts off to allow the new discs to fit in easily. Looks like I'm going back to loctite them then.

You don't have to, I only do it because it stops them corroding by sealing the threads, as long as you torqued 'em up properly it'll be fine.

Thanks for the message, I'll leave them then I made sure they were tight.

Many thanks for your help much appreciated! :)

To fill in the glossed over point, when you fitted the new pads, you pushed the pistons back into the callipers. This reduced the volume of the braking system "below" the reservoir, so the extra fluid ended up in the reservoir. The reservoir is/should be designed such that, when it is at "max level" and the pads are on minimum, the space above the max mark will hold the fluid displaced by fitting new brake pads.
