I've just aquired a Rover 220 Coupe. FSH with 84K on the clock (only problem is the head has gone).

Now I've got a few choices what I can do with it.

1) Break it down for spares

2) Fix the head and sell it on

3) Fix the head and turn it in to a trackday car

What would you guys do if it was yours?

You missed off the 'set fire to it and give oneself a slap for buying a rover' option :)

lol true but it's not the first time! What I paid for it I'd get back on the tax that is left on it though ;)

I've rung my insurance company and they will not touch rovers at all, the chap said it's becuase they are not made anymore. Could other insurance companies follow them?

If it was a turbo, I'd keep it! 200bhp hhmmmmm

You say the head has gone but what condition is the rest of the car in?

Once the head is gone the rest of it is of no use... :D

Eddy very good for it's year. The guy only had it MOT and serviced before it happened, he basically wants it out of the way as he has bought another car (more money than sense).

I take it you dont know what car it is?

What colour is it?

  • Author

Rover RED why?

edit: I typed in the wrong colour!

Wrong colour. I know someone who has one and needs a couple of bodywork bits, so if you were scrapping, I'd get him in touch with you, but his is blue.

aghh, I've been look about and parts are not that easy to come by, hence think I may make a bit of money by breaking it ;)

Ask on there if anyone would like it as it is or some advice on how much more you'd get for fixing it. They are nice cars, but once the HG has gone once, they tend to keep going.

cheers I'll have a good read up!

Surely this is a type M16 engine as found in Rover 600/800 series too? In which case it should cost the earth to replace.

Another option would be to drop a Honda 1.6 16V in it.

Depends on the hassle factor IMO. If the bodywork's sound it seems a shame to break it.

it is the M16 unit (in typical rover style it's got a weak head) same engine (bar turbo) that is in my uncles barge, 130k on and still going strong.

If I was to drop the 1.6 honda unit in I'd have to replace the subframe aswell due to different mounts (or so I've been told).

I've seen some M16 units for sale but usually it's either head failure or bottom ends

I've had two Rover Coupes. Both 220 Turbos.

It's definitely NOT an M16 engine. The 220 NASP and the 220 Turbo both used the T16 engine. If it's an M16 it's been replaced with the wrong unit.

The T16, even turboed, is practically bulletproof unless it's been abused. The NASP version very, very rarely loses its head unless it's either been thrashed to death, run out of oil or water, or has space shuttle miles.

I've seen NASPs with 200K on the clock on the original HG, valves and gearbox, and I've seen turbos go round the clock and a half.

I'd say keep it, strip it and track it. Parts are very, very easy to come by as 95% of the car is the same as any other 2.0 Rover 200 series of the same era.

I'd join www.rover-coupe.com forum for further advice.

Cheers WRC (sorry I cant remember your name :o ) would you mind if I bugged you if/when I get close to gettin it on the track?

Lets hope then it's just a leak in the rad :D

Keep it

More info on the way Mike, but these are sought after.

Head Gasket repair can be up to

Thanks for the PM you have one in return! ;)

Could always source a 1.8vvc engine and drop it in... i say track toy!

No bother... anything you want, I'll try my best to help. I know them pretty well.

Apparently that forum has been going downhill lately. I guess doing searches for any technical questions then it's a good place to be.

It's not seemed to be too bad to me.

Apart from the fact that it's far from a drop in job, why bother replacing a strong T16 2.0 with a weak HG eating complicated K-Series VVC?

If you wanted a replacement motor, a T16 2.0T would be the way to go. Strong enough for 250bhp on standard internals, and cheaper to fix if it breaks than any K.
