Featured Replies

Hi Im new here and planning to buy a Mk2 Fabia VRS as a treat for my 40th next year so just reading up about them for now. Im a mechanic to trade in a small independant garage in Scotland, not seem many Skodas in our place but know theyre good cars. Why VRS? Want something sporty but the wife just knows its a 1.4 and thats about it ????

Welcome to the forum.

Before searching out your car maybe best check out the pinned threads at the top of the Fabia Mk2 Section in the forum,

and gen up on the CAVE 2010-2012 or CTHE late 2012-2014 engines and the issues.

There are good ones around, bargains to be had, and there are lemons plenty of lemons.

A few from your area have had replacement engines fitted by the Main Dealers and others should have had and didn't get them.

So buyer beware and do your homework.  You can find good ones if you know the issues that makes for a possible really bad one.

Thanks for the info mate, ill read up on them for a bit. Do you think im best buying private or from a garage?

From a dealer as you know you can return in 30 days if it is a really bad one.  but you still want to buy a Skoda Warranty to give peace of mind when your Consumer Rights & their Warranty Expires.

You can find a good car private that a Briskoda Member might be selling or that knows of a good one.

Then still buy a Skoda Warranty.

I will be in your area quite a lot and can let you drive a good one.

Well maybe after Skoda let me know why the one i have sitting outside is in limp mode....

I should be through in the Ayr region at the end of the week and will driving a Fabia vRS quite likely.

We're in the fortunate position (now) of having a good one as George describes them, but only after having an engine change at 26k due to using litre of oil every 700 miles or so. With more good luck than anything else, and with fantastic help from George and vrskeith, ours was done by Skoda under warranty and thereby saved us around £4500.

But, and this is the good news, if you can find one like ours that's had an engine replacement (or the issue resolved in some satisfactory manner) there are lots of very good Cave and CTHE engined vRS out there, and not big money to buy them either. Ours has now done 28k in 2 years since engine change and hasn't used a drop, the wee car runs superbly and is a pleasure to own. Costs about £145 per annum in road tax, around £200 per annum for us in insurance, usually takes around £40 odd to fill it, driven carefully averages in the 40 0dd mpg (comes with health warning that figure if you insist on "surprising" a few other motorists). Very practical, 5 door, 5 seats, decent boot and comes with the bonus of being able to shift along nicely when needed. DSG is brilliant, versatile with ability to drive several different ways using paddles, stick or indeed just leave to box itself.

I'm in Ayr quite often and if I get a chance I'll make same offer as George (who's a top bloke by the way) to let you drive a good un if you haven't already bought one. I believe there's also a couple of vRS owners from Ayr or nearby on the forum.

Not so good George, I'll text you with a couple of updates on son's motor and that of his friend, one good news the other not so. Your advice on oil having reached end of life was spot on. Thanks again.

PS. If you do go ahead and buy one, even a good one, be very careful if thinking about modding or remapping the engine. These wee engines are already stretched to bring min 180ps from a 1.4 that has oil capacity of 3.6l. It's not to say that you shouldn't do it, more that if you decide to do so then be aware of the risks.

Pps. If you can, always try to run with best superunleaded you can find, Tesco Momentum runs min 99RON and is pretty good.
