2011 Octavia VRS CR170 - should the tyres be XL or not?

Featured Replies

Anyone know if the standard fit tyres on a 2011 TDI VRS should be XL (Extra load) or not?

According to the Goodyear tyre finder they're just 225/40 R18 92Y

The Michelins currently fitted to my Neptune are Extra Load though.....

Anyone know?

Cheers!

XL means nothing really. It's like saying High Speed, and has no real bearing on what the tyre's capability are without a reference. Your Michelins will have a load rating on them as well as the XL bit, so look at their load rating rather than the other bit. Someone might just've fitted higher load rated tyres because they were cheaper, but as long as they're not lower than the factory fit tyres then you're okay.

As regards the question, you should really be asking "What load rating do my tyres need to be?".

I think the "XL"  bit means the sidewalls are slightly stronger, as Rusty says it's the " 92Y" bit thats Important

My 2012 vRS TDi came fitted with XL tyres.  When buying a new set I found that most of the non-budget brands of 225/40-18 tyres were marked as XL - I didn't even investigate the budget brands.

My good years are xl and have a nice sized rim protector on them

Pretty cheap on asda tyres!

If your tyres arent xl then remember to use higher tyre pressures as they will have softer side walls. Id personally always get xl as they are more rigid and deform less under breaking cornering etc.
