Anyone ever bothered with mobile phone insurance?

Featured Replies

Just wondering if anyone here specifically insures their mobile phone? I guess some people might get cover (to one degree or another) via their home insurance, etc but often there are limits to what is paid along with some hefty excesses. Having just got a new phone it's something I'm considering as at the moment it would basically be a case of "hard luck" if it got lost, broken, stolen, etc.

insurance2go seems to offer the best price/cover @£70 pa (including accidental damage and cover whilst abroad) but, as always, I suppose you're only going to know how good they are at paying out if there's a problem.

Hmmmm....  :wonder:

a lot of banks offer phone insurance and breakdown cover and travel insurance in their monthly fees. Might be worth looking into.

I have a Nationwide bank account, I'm covered for worldwide travel insurance, Breakdown cover (which I have had to use, not with my Skoda :)  ) , and mobile phone insurance, all for £10 a month. I have found them to be a very good bank and I think that is great value. I have no affiliation other than being a customer of theirs.

Daughter had breakdown and phone insurance with her bank account. She broke down one day and called the breakdown number only to be told as she was less than 50 miles form her home address she wasn't covered.  Then she dropped her phone down the toilet (don't ask...) and found that the insurance had an excess of £100 and so many stipulations/exclusions on what she could claim for that it was basically worthless. Bank account got closed sharpish.

She now has breakdown cover which is worth having, costs £39 per year, and will cover her for all eventualities, and her phone is uninsured.

If you're going to insure a phone, make sure it covers you for anything you think might need to be claimed for, because (like most insurance policies) you're only covered for things which are unlikely to happen in most cases.

phone insurance - nah - my phones have only ever cost me less than £50 so not worth it in the slightest - I'm not into spending £500 just for the sake of it when a £30 phone runs the same / similar operating system and apps...

The problem with most of the standalone phone insurance policies is the phone is only covers up to 2/3 years old.

I still have my Samsung Note 3 and no intention of upgraded a perfectly working phone.

I have cover through my bank. I once claimed when my HTC sensation got wet and broke.

One piece of advice I would give after experiences with claiming for mobile phone repairs is to make sure that if they carry out repairs, that they are done by the manufacturer or using genuine parts, either that or make the phone totally irreparable so they have to give you a new one.

I say this because I claimed for an Iphone screen and a new battery for the Mrs and it came back with badly fitted and terrible quality aftermarket components. If I wanted to fit a 10 Bob screen I would of done it myself.

Nope. But then never really had a phone that would ruin me to replace.

Most separate policies don't cover theft unless aggravated (ie you get injured).

If it's a phone on contract the network policies are often pretty good. EE used to be considered the best if that's your network.

Few policies protect sim free handsets

My phone insurance policy consists of not owning a phone someone would want to steal or I can't replace it easily if lost/broke. Cheap phones ftw.

Nah, get a wallet, be careful :D

Hi,

We offer separate policies for gadget cover. If you wanted to PM me I'd be happy to arrange a quotation for you.

Kind Regards

Dan

Only insurance I will ever pay is car and home contents cover (buildings is covered by the landlord) - as far as I am concerned the rest are there just to line the pockets of insurance companies. As an example, work had a policy with a very well advertised phone insurance company, who refused to repair the phone of one of the reps who had dropped it and cracked the screen getting out of his car. Needless to say, that has now been knocked on the head.....

My sons GF had "Protect My Bubble" and another company I cannot currently remember the name of, BOTH failed to pay out on different phones she dropped, and/or drowned over a three year period (being a butter fingers is why she took out insurance!!)

On the other hand Orange (as was) replaced my sons phone after he forgot to take it out of his pocket while testing a repair on a superkart; it promptly fell out of his pocket at 90mph and was then run over by another cart - just to make sure!!

Based on this, you have two options, buy on contract where you ARE usually covered, or buy a cheapish phone and the best case you can find - I have dropped my phone loads of times, but as it is in a "wallet" case, no damage has occurred.

As I said, EE insurance always used to be very good with same day/24 hour replacement. Also covers calls made if stolen or did.

I think these days there's an admin fee per claim, but back in the orange days I had it free in my contract.

I have cover with my bank account. I dropped the phone while popping it out the case, it landed corner first on a slate floor and cracked/chipped the screen.

Put in a claim. For repair and had to pay a £20 excess. Repaired phone was back with me (by courier) less than a week aafter it had been collected (by courier)
