Brake disc shield/guard rusted off

Featured Replies

My front right brake disc guard started rattling and hitting the brake disc and when i pushed against it, it came off completely.

Rusted all the way through!

The other side seems sound but im sure it will need replacing soon enough

The whole front suspension & rear drums seems really rusty so i think the previous owner did alot of driving on salty wet roads (car was originally driven in Wales lol)

Car is a 56 plate 99,000 mile 1.2 fabia

I replaced the front discs not long ago and noticed the amount of rust on the callipers, struts and track rod ends.

I wondered if it was ok to drive without this guard in place and whether i should replace it asap (they seem expensive for a bit of metal)

Also i want to replace the track rod ends as the boots have started perishing, and the tracking is in need of doing, but im worried about not being able to undo the nut and rounding it off as there is so much rust on it.

Is it normal for a fabia to have this must rust on the front suspension and around the brakes?

From what you say, it's probably a bad idea to keep driving with the shields in the condition they're in, but they're not mandatory.

well ive completely removed one of the shields and the other is solid at the moment so im guessing it will be ok for a bit

You're ok then.

Removed both fronts and rears, had no MOT issues and has not caused any issues with braking.

Pretty sure they are there to stop stones and stuff getting trapper between pads and discs.

Well, they reduce spray on the discs, but stones can and do get trapped between the disc and the shield.

Exactly....

The rears on a Fabia with rear discs are a PITA to replace..............you have to remove the rear hubs as they are "sandwiched" between the hub backing plate & the beam axle arm & when tightening up the bolts it can distort the shield...

Been there done that..
