brake / tail light brightness

Featured Replies

I just changed the brake light to a LED bulb. and two x T10 filament bulbs to LED too.

the picture shows the tail light turned on. the brakes are NOT stepped on. the LED bulb is so bright that the cluster looks like brakes is engaged.

i want to reduce the LED brightness but was unsuccessful.

Leuchte24SL HLC10-Dimmwert AB 24

Leuchte24SL HLC10-Dimmwert CD 24

tried anything from 0 to 127 and the brightness doesn't change. anyone knows which channel i should be looking at instead?

thanks.

Have you put the bulb in the right way around?

The standard brake/tail bulb is a 566 with offset bayonet fittings.

If these bulbs are forced into the holder incorrectly it is possible to fit them the wrong way around i.e. brake lights come on when tail lights turned on and vice versa.

Seems like the led is single bayonet. Does it affect anything?

Please post up a complete adaptation map ideally in excel, then we can see all your channels and how they are set up.

Thanks

I have extracted the adaptation map and looked at all the values for Leuchte2x

managed to reduce the brightness of the LED tail /brake lights.

i will post it up later.

I have another question - Is it possible to have the lower tail/fog lights to light up as well when the brakes are pressed on?

It's illegal already, so why not make it confusing, too?

The law states two brake lights and one centre one. No more.

Yep, it's easily possible.

All you have to do is to add 'brake light' function to your rear fogs.

There's a very detailed 'Leuchte programming' guide here.

If you are not sure what to do just post or PM your adaptation map.

Sorry, which bit is illegal?

Yep, it's (maybe) illegal but not confusing IMO.

Some Merc's have dual brake lights from the factory.

An upper and a lower brake light in each rear cluster.

I don't think it's a dangerous of confusing mod.

i changed the top brake/tail light and 4 side lights to LED bulbs.

Here's the coding i made for my Greenline to adjust the brightness of the LED.

Leuchte20BR LA71-Dimmwert CD 20   - change this value to adjust brightness for Top Left tail light

Leuchte21BR RC8-Dimmwert CD 21 - change this value to adjust brightness for Top Right tail light

Leuchte20BR LA71-Lasttyp 20 - change to LED if the LED bulb gives you error

Leuchte21BR RC8-Lasttyp 21 - change to LED if the LED bulb gives you error

repeat for the following if needed.

Leuchte23SL is for the Left Rear Sidelight

Leuchte24SL is for the Right Rear Sidelight

Leuchte26NSL is for bottom left tail light

Leuchte27NSL is for bottom right tail light

'Leuchte26NSL LA72-Lichtfunktion B 26' from 'not active' to 'Brake light'

'Leuchte26NSL LA72-Dimmwert AB 26' from '0' to '100' (also needs changing as this light is disabled from the factory)

'Leuchte27NSL RC6-Lichtfunktion B 27' from 'not active' to 'Brake light'

Replacing halogen / filament bulbs with LEDs. Any LED units have - by definition - non-replaceable LEDs to stop people messing.

Any E marking is attained with a specific light source. It's no different for rear lights than it is for front ones.

Goodness

Replacing halogen / filament bulbs with LEDs

You 100% sure about that?

My understanding is that if the bulb (LED, halogen, WHY) is E marked AND the luminare is E marked then there isn't any issue.

Fitting non E marked bulbs (usually sold with packaging that clearly state "For Off Road Use Only" is obviously not legal - but done by hundreds of thousands of people throughout Europe

It's more complex than that, the luminaire will only retain it status when used with the same light source as when tested, any other will invalidate it's type approval.

There aren't any drop in E-marked LED bulb available as they aren't able to meet the same specification as a halogen bulb. This is completely expected as it's very hard to replicate the output pattern of a filament lamp with LED's. This doesn't mean that good LED drop ins aren't adequate, just not legal :)

It is possible to get approval for LED's in existing halogen luminaires, for instance Philips have done the required testing for their LEDs in a small subset of US vehicles. Therefore you can use the specified Philips LED to replace the original halogen but only in the vehicles mentioned on these pages when used in the US:

I don't believe any company has attempted to do the same in the UK/Europe...

I don't believe any company has attempted to do the same in the UK/Europe...

That's a shame - probably not worth the cost of getting approval, since most Europeans just fit the LED bulbs anyway

Which Europeans? The Germans won't do it because they know their insurance will be invalidated. The Finns won't do it because there's big signs all over these bulbs in the local "Halfords", i.e. Motonet, saying "offroad use only". The only exception I know of is Swedes with their fetish for light out the front - which I can forgive because, living here, you really see *darkness* in a way most UK residents haven't seen in years. And when there are elk wandering around...

Anyways, whether others do it or not is another story. It's your call whether you modify or not.

 - Bret

Which Europeans?

Most of Southern and Eastern Europe plus much Western Europe (with a few exceptions such as Germany) - all of whom have little respect for authority and rules.

Plus the UK of course  :D
