Seat belt extension, legalities and safety

Featured Replies

My daughter(6) sometimes struggles to get the seatbelt done up in the back of my car. If her car seat is over a fraction then it partially blocks the seat belt clip and she can't press it home.

I didn't have the problem in my twindoor so must be something on the estates seats that's making a difference.

The clip was over an inch or a bit higher she could do it herself.

So I have looked into seat belt extension pieces to make the buckle available right beside her seat not buried in the seat base as it is in the moment.

I'm just not sure if it's legal for use in this situation or whether there is a safety test they should pass. Anyone know anything of any use and whether its just one of those things that I'll have to live with?

Annoyingly the identical childs seat in our Fabia isn't a problem!

I would check with your insurance company first about the cover side of things, after that make sure that you have the correct certificates available for whichever one you buy, and if the insurance company require copies, let them have them. Considering the value of the person it is restraining, belt and braces (no pun intended) approach would be best, get all angles covered. Think of your daughter as a priceless ming vase, you wouldn't secure that in the car with some gaffa tape and baler twine.

Is it just a practice thing? My 6yr old boy struggles with his own seatbelt but he can do it.

Plus your daughter will be getting bigger so it might be that the problem will be solved with the next growth spurt.

It's not lack of practise. She easily does it in the Fabia on her own. In the Superb the buckle gets slightly covered by the seat, moving it just a tiny amount and she can do it.

I was wondering if the buckle is shorter on the estate to allow the seat to fold. On the twindoor you couldn't fold them flat.

I'd really like to present the buckle only an inch higher!
