Passat CAYC engine leaking oil?

Featured Replies

Hello there all, Firstly i apologise for posting a thread on an issue relating to a VW on the Skoda forum, not sure if i am allowed to however i haven't had any luck on the VW forums, also having posted issues in the past relating to my VW Polo i had a lot of help from you guys.

I purchased a 2011 Model VW Passat 1.6Tdi Bluemotion about 6 months and 16,000 miles ago.

Took her to have her tyres changed yesterday and noticed oil had leaked down the back of the engine which was visible through the wheel arch.

Was hoping this was from a previous oil leak or oil spill from last service however upon inspection the dip stick indicated 0.5lt of oil had been lost. I had checked the oil level about a month ago at which point it was full.

Then checked oil filter, no signs of leakage there, i took the engine cover off and saw signs of oil near the turbo and some signs of oil down the back of the engine, please see images attached.

I refilled the oil today and will be inspecting at frequent intervals to see at what rate the engine is losing oil.

i apologise again for posting a VW issue on here, but i am slightly desperate.

Please do not delay & go see a mechanic and get it fixed before you drop oil on the road causing others to be desperate for medical help in the event the spill causes them to have an accident.

Hello Ofski,

If there was any oil dripping onto the road i would have been to a mechanic a long time ago.

The oil is leaking at a slow rate. My driveway has no oil spillage on it, which is the reason why i had not noticed the oil leak.

The leak appears so slight that that I suggest just keeping an eye on it. If you can reach it, wipe it off with a rag and see how much (if any) more oil appears within a week. It may even be an old leak or spill which is no longer an issue.

What is at the other end of the large pipe?

I'm just wondering if oil is getting in via the breather and then the EGR gasses being sooty are allowing build up and the oil to come out.

It wasn't uncommon on the older PD engines.

0.5 litres in a month is not a great amount used in a month. (not knowing how many miles you covered.)

Well not compared to the many oil burners that are in VW Group vehicles where the Employees try to say 0.5 litres in 621 miles is acceptable.(1000km)

But with a usually not using oil engine then 0.5 litres loss in a month is quite a bit, and not just the kind of oil that shows in the picture.

?

How do you check your oil level, cold dips or at Operating Temperature, and was it yourself that put the oil & new filter in so know the quantity added?

Sounds like you have got two separate issues. Slight oil leakage and  using oil.

As said , clean up the visible oil staining with a solvent and watch where it is creeping from. My old Passat PD produced a similar weep from around the bottom hose on the intercooler. When I reported an oil leak to the main dealer the reply was iirc "Theres not meant to be any oil in that area so its not a leak"

Thanks for the responses, the other end of the large pipe is the air filter.

I have been covering roughly 2000 miles a month. I will be keeping a close eye on oil consumption. I do check the oil level once a month or so (due to bad experience with my previous bmw), and it's only the last month the oils been consumed which leads me to believe there is definitely something wrong.

I will try to get under the car when i get a chance. i don't think it's from a previous oil spill.

I hope it's nothing to do with the turbo. I haven't experience and over boosting or whine from the turbo so for the time i am crossing my fingers and will update you guys with any developments.

The 1.6TDI I had in my mk2 used to leak oil - I'd find the injector holes filling up with oil, but was never able to determine the source.  The crank case breather pipework used to have a bit of oil around it (pic 1), but I saw similar tell-tale oil marks down the rear of the engine block (pic 2).

Never did to the bottom of what was causing my leak.  Part-ex'd it instead.

mmmm I have also got some oil in the injector holes.

Having just spoken to a friend he suggested it could possibly be due to the cam cover gasket....Could be. I haven't heard of many instances of this being an issue on VW's i know it is on BMW's. i've only seen one other thread of a leaky cam gasket on a CAYC engine.

My friend is a BMW enthusiast who has fairly good mechanical knowledge.

i guess a leaky cam gasket would lead to oil leaking down the back of the engine but would it lead to oil in the injector holes? hmm.

A couple of garages looked at mine, steam cleaned it, the place I bought it from claimed they had changed the rocker cover gasket, but I don't believe they did.

The leak seemed to be very slow, and I suspect happens more so at higher RPMs.  I asked on here about 18months ago (on the mk2 forum) and got very feedback at that time.  However time has moved on, so there may be more people suffering similar issues.

I think I found the oil pooled more in the middle two injector holes (and then one towards the "middle" of the car.  The only way I could imagine oil in the injector holes was either from the holes themselves (!!) or from the CCV pipework, but that looked fine to me.

Well i've given it a clean and will keep a close eye on the engine bay to identify where oil seems to be seeping out from. Will update soon as.

Thanks for the responses guys really appreciate it, haven't had a single reply on the other forums. You guys have been great.

So after a drive today popped open the bonnet and signs of oil on top of the engine seeping. Feel really stupid but what is the part in the image below?

It seems that this part is seeping the most oil as you can see from the image.

I'd call that the "top of the crank case breather assembly", no idea on the proper name for it though.

yeah same here, i won't be covering as much mileage as i was previously due to a change in work. Weekly mileage should be roughly 100 miles a week down from 650 a week.

I'm going to monitor it for the time being and will probably have to take it into a garage to get it done eventually.

I'm assuming/hoping it's only a seal/gasket.

thanks mate :)

May have been the same issue as mines... as you can see from my picture, had i run the engine long enough the oil would have eventually reached the injectors.

1/2 litre of oil in 2000 miles is "acceptable" consumption according to the manual. My PDI was doing that at one time and I just kept topping up.

This is more about where the oil goes.... pooling on the top of the engine and leaking down the back probably wasn't part of VAG's design / deal with the oil companies!!
