Who runs on LPG?

Featured Replies

It's something I had thought about for my next car- could get a 330 and convert it for cheaper than buying a 330d.

Can you get conversions where the extra filler cap is inside the boot 'cos IMO it looks a bit silly with two filler caps (don't mean to offend).

Personally I can't see the point in converting a Suzuki Ignis. Surely you'd be better buying a Fabia vRS?

Bear with me here, but the Ignis costs about 10k, plus £1500 for a conversion.

Fabia is about £12k.

In 3 years the Ignis will be worth £3k, the Fabia £4.5k (according to parkers).

At about 35mpg on LPG in an Ignis (at 44ppl) it should cost about 6p per mile to run.

A Fabia at 50mpg (at 92ppl) should cost about 8p per mile.

So if you do 25k a year, you will save £500 a year in fuel costs if you have the Ignis. Which is nicely offset over the 3 years by the depreciation difference.

So over 3 years the only saving you will make with the Ignis is £500 on the initial purchase price. £14 a month for a far nicer better performing car doesn't sound like much to me!

Of course, if you bought the car used/ do more than 25k a year/ plan to keep for more than 3 years then the savings get bigger so feel free to tell me to shut my face if my assumptions are wrong!

The Octavia vRS on LPG on the other hand seems like a great idea- the economy of a Fabia vRS with the performance of an Octy vRS, and when you consider that the Octy is a bit of a bargain to buy anyway, it makes it that much better!

I didnt buy a fabia vrs because

1.I dont want another skoda, the build quality is not up to the fabled vw build quality we all know, my octavia rs had loads of uncureable rattles

2.Skoda customer service is ****

3.I paid

Fair enough!:D:thumbup:

Since you only paid 5k for it that means it's about 4k cheaper than the cheapest vRS- that will make it massively cheaper to run!

Personally I'd rather my car sounded like a tractor than looked like a wardrobe with a bodykit and fog lights but thats just my opinion!:P ;)

Fortunately not everyone has the same opinion.

Good on ya buddy for making a different choice and I hope the savings work out for you.

Maybe if the fabia rs had a full wrc kit and split rims as standard it would be another story, but I love the shape of the ignis that hooked me right in. Too many new cars are too round.

Its hardly a wardrobe though lol

This is a wardrobe. Nissan Cube.

Just dug up this thread after a search for LPG - has anyone else converted?

Working from the info in this thread I'd need to cover 28017 miles before I see the financial benefits of a conversion :( Was hoping it would be less than that.

How come the conversions are so expensive anyway? Surely there isnt much to it.

Well you can buy a kit for under a £1000 pounds but you need to get it fitted.

The kit obviously has a filler, tank, injectors,a vapouriser, filters,ECU,piping running from tank to engine bay etc.

it can take up to and sometimes longer than 3 days to carry out a conversion.

i have converted 3 Land Rovers with a friend of mine all using the older style 'Venturi' type system and they were taking a minimum of 3 days.

I considered it when I had my Octavia, but it didn't justify the cost with my annual mileage of around 12,000 combined with a figure around 30 mpg.

Now I have a Jeep, it did justify the cost.

how much have they quoted you? I was offered £500 off I had it done a few weeks ago as their fitters weren't busy!

Daytripper was saying that if you go above 5k rpm then it also uses petrol, is that right?

Mine doesn't, but I can see why some may do that, as the performance on LPG is a bit of a let down after running on petrol.

Sorry boyced took 2 months to read this thread again. Yes when mine gets to 5,500 rpm it switched over to super unleaded and you cannot feel the transfer.

The gas injectors on mine were fitted very close to the manifold, something to do with making it more responsive, im sure Alex can elaborate on this.

Here is a better pic.
