If you had £6k to spend on a family barge/SUV what would you buy?

Featured Replies

Mate's just been made redundant and his company Touran has to go back.  He can spend a bit more than six if needed, but I'm saying he can get a good replacement and spend less.

Needs 5 seats and room for a buggy & luggage.  Won't be doing long journeys - likely to be petrol.

So what would you go for?

Zafira vxr!!

and a good fire extinguisher :sun:

If you've got 6k to spend on a second hand car, spend 3k and keep 3k in your pocket to fix it. Pretty much goes for any second hand vehicle.

How long does he want to keep it for? Can he do his own basic spannering?

Depends on if he has any type of specific requirement but just going on "large, comfy and reliable" and not doing too many miles I'd go for something like a Volvo V70.  They're built like tanks, will do silly mileage and the lower bhp petrols (avoid the T5/T5R models) aren't massively popular as they're not very good on fuel (combined is about 30mpg iirc).

I've owned a couple of Volvos myself (N reg 850 T5 and a W reg S40 1.8) and my folk have owned loads over the years and they've all been pretty bomb proof and not too expensive to fix/service as long as you avoid the main dealers.

I'd backup what StevesTruck says though, it's all too easy to be tempted to get the "best" car you can stretch to and leave yourself really thin - I've done that myself.

Nope, he hasn't got a clue.  Smashing chap, not to be trusted with a spanner!

I've got him thinking about a Yeti, but I'm really wondering whether to steer him towards Japanese for the potential better reliability.

If it were me, I'd be very up for a V70.  He's been spoiled though with the Touran and a Golf Plus before that, so I think he's likely to balk at their mpg.  I've suggested a Passat Estate should be on his option list.

Seat Altea XL, he could get a 1.9 tdi (no DPF) for that budget. Or for something a bit prettier, a Mazda 6 estate with the 2.0 petrol engine (2008 onwards model).

Don’t even think about a Yeti for “Needs 5 seats and room for a buggy & luggage"

Yeti’s are good but the boot is small, how about an Octavia or better still Superb?

Comes up as a dead link on Autotrader...   :(

Ah it was sold anyway, but it was s (2010 IIRC) Superb Elegance estate 1.8 TSi with 60K miles for £5K!!

I've got a mazda5 Furano 07 petrol that will be looking for a new home soon if he's interested? Will be under £3k

There is a reason that VW 1.8TSI engine cars like the Superb can be much cheapness at 60,000 miles or so.

But then if you were to mention it to Skoda UK Customer Services the call handler might not know what you are even suggesting.

A look in the Superb, Octavia or Yeti section might give some idea of the reason though, like a post today in the Superb ll section.

Honda F-RV...

Well built, quirky and every bit as good as the Touran and Golf Plus but more reliable.

More details please - this is something I'd already added to his shopping list.

It's dark grey, 2 owners, good service history. Just had new front shocks, front discs and pads, rear drop links, rear trailing arm bushes done. Nearly a full MOT, only selling due to new car on order.

Link removed, the Autotrader site is poor, can't get it to work.

Sounds like he isn't an enthusiast - 1/ Honda or 2/ Toyota

Exactly so.  He's been thinking about a Renault Grand Scenic, but I told him I'd find him.... and kill him.... if he did  :dull:

Larger Honda's or possibly an Avensis Verso also on the list of potentials.

Absolutely

Rust aside they'll never wear out if they keep oil in the sump

Honda Accord estate petrol - £6k would buy as low mileage latest shape one. v. reliable and good to drive, just not that roomy in the back seats or boot.

CRV could be an option, although the petrols are quite juicy.

Thing with CRV's is they're a decent truck, but they do rust underneath, especially as the horsey set like them, so they do see a lot of muddy fields.

+1 - BIL got one when he lived in canada and half its arse was missing from rust

Hey  :finger:  .  I used to have a Renault Scenic!  The space was useful. But... things did break   And it smelled like a tent that had got damp inside... :peek:  etc... So, on balance, yes...
