Water Repellents For Glass and Plastics

Featured Replies

I've been cleaning and treating the  door mirrors , side windows and rear window with Rainex to keep road dirt and salt spray off as much as possible. I will not use it on the windscreen ever again due to the thick net curtain effect from tiny beads of water.

How about the plastic headlight and fog light lenses? The Rainex instructions seem to forbid its use on anything apart from glass. I have used it in the past occasionally on my FL Octavia and various motorcycle windscreens without visible harm or damage.

I have also used Pledge multi surface cleaner on clear plastics, again without visible damage over many years and just given my lights a quick polish with that. Any ideas or comments?

I use a sealant like EZ Car Care projectX or PM wintercoat. Both can be used on plastic parts

I use gtechniq on the windscreen and side windows. Great stuff. I personally don't think there is any noticeable difference coating the headlights so I don't bother

I use gtechniq too it is safe for both plastics and glass

Another thumbs up for GTechniq, brilliant product

Personal preference is Aquapel, mainly for durability.  I need to get another coat on my fleet as not done for over a year I think (but still working (ish) )

In today's torrential rain, the Rainex has made a big difference to the visibility through the rear rear screen with the water beading up and actually rolling off the screen. I cleaned the windscreen with Autoglym glass polish and the wipers are working well. Obviously NO beading, just a uniformly wet screen.

I did the drivers and front passenger side windows but not the rears. The improvement in side visibility is noticeable when pulling out of our side road.Mirrors? well no obvious improvement.

I'll stick with the products I've got in the garage. Those other brands are too expensive to entice me at present.

Which product is this? There is one called

G1 clear vision smart glass

and another called

G5 water repellant coating

I've been using Aquapel myself, but I'm not overwhelmed.

I use G1, with G2 residue remover. Not tried the G5 but it's not meant to last nearly as long

The car was treated to TSP included G1. I regularly use C2 to finish off a clean.

I use Autoglym Fast Glass, works a treat & can be grabbed from Halfords, especially when the have the 3 for 2 offer.
