Best place for Diesel Tuning for economy?

Featured Replies

As above guys, looking for a local place to Worcester / Birmingham to do a Economy chip on my 2L Scout CR140

had a browse online but get quite vague responses in terms of what exactly is done, how much more mpg / bhp is added.

If anyone has any experience / has access to the relevant tools / etc  I would be grateful to know

Thanks

Unit 18 in Milton Keynes do Shark remaps IIRC. Excellent remaps and Ali is a top bloke.

excellent, I have just dropped them an email.

When remapping I would consider how long you are going to keep the car and what your aims are. If it is purely for economy a map wont really save you anything. If you think about it logically, how many miles and how much fuel would you have to do to make up that initial outlay of £300 plus for the map. In a diesel it would be many thousands of miles. It would be wiser just to use the money on diesel. Now if it is power you are after, I'd wholly recommend a map. Shark are food at maps but I am going with Superchips for my VRS CR170.

See that bit that sticks out on the end of your right leg? Try using it more gently, and thinking further ahead.

Superchips over shark!?!

That's like having dog food over steak.

After I did mine (the same 2.0 TDI with 140 hp, cr), the fuel consumption stayed more or less the same. I wasn't able to see any difference.

The car was more powerful, though :) (~170 hp; ~390 Nm)

Rob,

Check out AP Automotive at Telford.

Good reputation and part of Briskoda.

All the best.

There's the balance in the equation - if you see the car more powerful, you are driving it harder, so the economy drops...............

After mine was first remapped, the fuel economy dropped, but that was purely because it was so much more fun to use the new found power. Now it's back to being driven gently, the fuel economy has greatly improved. Also to note, the diesel smoke reading on the MOT is significantly lower after remapping, showing the engine is running more efficiently

Most of my milage is long trips that are being driven mostly in cruise control. It should be the way to reduce the fuel consumption but actually I don't see any difference.

Probably it depends how the remap is done.

I have had maps from both companies before and no issues with either. But I get the Superchips map free of charge as oppsosed to £300+ for Shark.

Avon tuning just north of Bristol have a rolling road to etc etc so you will get to see the difference from before and after.

you are only just over an hour away from them.

but they generally have been known to have a 1-2 month waiting list

I had my 08 vRS worked by Avon tuning in Bristol, it's made a world of difference. The car makes diesel.... full tank from home (505miles range) to work 56miles (525miles range) LOL and Oooohhhhh the power, plenty there to pass other cars.

I do drive carefully and plan ahead.

I also have a Class 1 HGV License so have done the SAFED course and have many years driving ....

I can obtain 50mpg on a mix of town and driving to work...  I just want more....

Thankyou all for you input.

If you want mpg then leave it the way it is from the factory. Mpg increase after a remap is false advertising.

My tip for mpg. Don't go over the speed limit.

I wasn't aware that SAFED was economy driving; I thought it was about smoothness for work like tankers and hanging meat?

To answer your rhetorical question, my 1.9PD was remapped, produced on average about 4mpg better. In one year that's a £400 saving with my mileage. So I can afford 1 remap a year plus a nice meal out afterward ;) and get there quicker too! :D

You must spend a fortune on fuel to make that sort of saving. It would be interesting to see your workings out as I know 4mpg extra wont be all the time. Like most people I do short and long journeys and dont always get more mpg per journey. It depends on volume of traffic etc. I hear what you are saying but I cant see you making £400 of saving each year. But if you can then it is money better in your pocket than the fuel stations.

I got thinking about this and have just worked out using an online mpg calculator. I usually get between 700 to 630 miles per tank full. I have used a base figure of 650 per tank. The fuel tank takes 55 litres at £1.32.9 a litre for BP Ultimate. I input the mpg at 55 and at 59 so it would cost £71.40 and £66.56 per journey of 650 miles. Making a difference for the extra 4mpg of £4.84 cheaper. Now it would take me 82.6 full tank refills to get £400 back. That is a lot of diesel and in total 53690 miles to make back the £400 on the map.
