SMIC as good as FMIC?

Featured Replies

Teeny bit off thread, the plastic trim that's surrounding the drivers side fog lamp, I read somewhere that it can be converted to allow air to reach the SMIC. Can anyone point me in the right direction with pictures if poss. Cheers.

You can just pull it out completely if you like - mine is drilled to allow a bit more flow...:D

There's dedication to the cause for you - that's not dirt on there, that's frost from taking the picture a couple of minutes ago

As the pic shows, the greatest gain would be by removing the foglight altogether, so you get air playing directly on to the intercooler surface. WW_VRS was thinking of using a fan to assist cooling - any results WW?

Tell you what, there's some clever buggers on this forum  thanks for your time guys and Jut, looks really good as well. Nearly original, possible Skoda idea ? Now why didn't they think of that.

But what about a route for a cold air feed, perhaps from one of the grilles? Anyone?

Any piping you run would likely get in the way of the existing ducting, and therefore hinder rather than help - unless you start cutting holes in your bumper...

Err no, perhaps not bumper cutting! Just a thought really - would have made a nice alternative, get more air into the existing SMIC, and let more hot air out with Pikey Mod 1, be it with mesh, drilled holes or the TT arch liner method :)

Didnt go for the fan in the end, due to buying FMIC :D

I was however told that a fan would impede cooling at speed (although IMHO it would still be ok) whereas at lower speeds it would probably help.

When I looked into it at the time I did spot a few fans that are retro-fit to rads etc, replacement ones and so forth. You'd need one that had as little plastic / metal obstructing the normal SMIC, so possibly a touch larger than the SMIC itself, and then fabricate a bracket of some sort to hold it safely in place.

You could run it permanent with an on/off switch to keep it cheapish, and you wouldn't run out of water unlike with a waterspray system. Nothing will beat a FMIC in the Fabia vRS though just coz of the way components are fitted. Now I'm getting a hybrid fitted etc I reckon the extra cooling will be needed :D

Cheapest & most effective mod are going to be the cutting out a bit of plastic to let more air in from the front and the venting of the arch (liner?) so the hot air can get out. Shouldnt cost you more than a tenner plus a bit of work if you use mesh etc, bit more for 'proper' TT bit to chop & change/glue. If I hadn't gone for FMIC that's probably the one I would have gone for in the end, esp. on standard car :)
