Power for dashcam

Featured Replies

Hi,

Is there any 12v power source near either footwell that could be used for a dash cam? I don't want a power cable running from the lighter between the shifter. It should only be powered with the ignition on. I don't mind cutting some cables but what i don't want is to take too much of the interior trim off.

Fuse box behind the Glove box . There is a guide on here.

Removing the glove box is tricky but have a look on youtube there is a couple of videos. Good Luck

Is the lighter powered with the ignition off? Dont want it draining the battery if i take the power from that circuit breaker.

Yes it is. You could find a fuse which is switched with ignition though like the rear wiper perhaps. Mine is on all the while I do very few miles and no issues.

I fitted my dashcam a couple of weeks ago. Remove the glovebox and tap into a switched ignition live, think fuse 36 is what I used - it wasn't previously used by anything.

I'm also interested in this but just curious (haven't bought the dashcam yet).

I'd like it to be wired in to permanent power, for the "carpark sensor" function when parking publically...... but I want to be able to turn it off when parking at home.

I assume the camera will not use any power at all, if I physically switch it off, but it's connected to permanent power-on source?

Sorry for such a silly question - my natural assumption is that it would only drain the battery if it was constantly recording when the engine is not running, if the camera is physically switched on?

Mine is wired behind the glovebox to the fuse box and live all the time. The camera has motion sensor so if anyone walks, drives past. reverses near it fires up and records. When in standby all that is powered up is a tiny power led. I should think you could run the led for years on a car battery without it going flat. As far as I am led to believe the car has some protection stopping the battery going flat anyway.

My BlackVue when left in the car for about 9 days caused a "low battery warning" when I got in the car.  I'd left it plugged into the cigarette lighter socket, and the camera has gone into parking mode (doesn't write to the SD card, but remembers the last 10 seconds incase there is an impact/movement of the vehicle).  I've got a BlackMagic box which I need t fit which powers down the unit after 10 minutes (my desired configuration).

Removing the glovebox is easy. Trying to hook the damper back in place - that is the tricky part!

Turns out that my fusebox is next to the steering wheel, behind the small compartment since its LHD. A lot easier to access!

I've got mine plugged into the USB port as it is powered down with the ignition. A lot less hassle
