Rain / Light Sensor Retro fit from a Seat Leon

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I know this topic has been covered several times and the parts involved to achieve this on Octy's without them. However just lastnight I had a thought that both of the Mk2 Seat Leon's I owned came with RLS as

standard and the RL sensor was a separate unit installed on the passenger side of the windscreen as shown in the images below.

Instead of butcher at the windscreen or replacing it am sure it will be easy enough to use the one from a Leon and wire it?

May be a question to ask the king of retrofits @Eddie-NL :)

What do you guys think? Possible?

Can somebody please lookup ETKA and perhaps the parts involved?

True praise where praise is due too.

Just remember the Leon (5K0 by Continental) and Octavia (1K0 by Hella) use different BCM's which might cause issues as the RLS connects to it. This might help though http://www.realoem.me/Seat/E/LE/2011/703/R/9/955/955000

Another alternatives which allow the use of the correct RLS:

Windscreen cracks aren't uncommon in winter due to the temperature so if you were unlucky enough to have yours break, it might be worth having a replacement fitted that allows for a RLS and auto-dimming mirror.

Hmmm interesting so which one do you suggest? The sensor you have mentioned in the link (for Leon) looks different to the one I had in both of my Leons (Mk2 2011 and 2013). I only wished I had taken a picture of the sensor itself before selling it. I have got in touch with the seat parts manager for part numbers so will post them here when I get them.

I'd be trying to find a way to mount a 1K0955559AH as that's the correct RLS for a FL Octavia.

Probably using the parts, 1K0845543, 1T0955737, 1T0955738 to mount and cover it along with the appropriate glass primer/glue.

I would make sure to mount it somewhere under the wipers sweep area and probably near the rear view mirror so if the glass ever is replaced you can do a full factory retrofit then :)

Awesome sounds like a plan. :)

What would it be like to wire it? Is there a wiring diagram I can refer to?

Thanks

Easy to wire, it just needs power, ground and a wire to the BCM.

Everything you need to know is on the thread below, look at the "mk6 VW Golf, Jetta (2010 and later), and Passat rain light sensor (RLS) installation notes" for the correct wiring diagram. It also gives advise if you want to do the auto-dimming mirror at the same time to mount it in the correct place.

The part numbers you mentioned matches the ETKA picture you mentioned earlier. So you recommend that's all I need to do the conversion? However the sensor part number is different (AH)?

Also would have the part numbers for the repair wire and glue etc?

Is it REALLY worth it? I have had auto wipers on both my old 54 plate and my current 08 plate Elegance Octys and they are a pain in the backside. Swapping from slow to fast, then off when needed, to working when sunlight flickers on the screen going under trees - I have long wanted to convert them to normal intermittent. My 62 plate SE Plus doesn't have auto wipers, and the intermittent wipe on that is fantastic compared to the cars with the rain sensor.

And as far as dimming the mirror goes, its no hardship to flip the dipping lever when needed.

Definately not a retrofit I would even consider myself.

Mike

I see your point though. I had RLS in both my Leons and loved it mainly for when the headlights turned off / on automatically and then features like leaving home. I do agree with the auto wipers, it certainly was a pain when it didn't react quickly enough when I wanted the windscreen to be wiped. I did see myself switching to manual mode many times.

It's not an immediate retrofit I want to carry out as finding time on weekends and fighting against day light.

Well guys found something while researching for light sensor.

Its made by a US based company for Mk5 and Mk6 Golf / Jetta. It works on the Mk6 golf with the trigger wire.

What do you reckon?

Seems like a plug and play to make things work. No VCDS coding required and has built in 30 secs coming home feature.

Worth a try but skeptic if it will do any hard to the BCM?

First of it is made in China, you can search for it on ebay and cut out the middle man

It does work although I prefer the oem solution

The light switch from the mk6 golf is a round shape where the octavia one is slightly oval shape

Didn't someone find one that fitted properly iirc?

I find the auto wipers work well on my FL, I turn the wipers on when it starts and they deal with anything from spray up to downpour adjusting as needed. I wouldn't be without the auto-dimming rear mirror either.

As with all things, it just depends what's important to you. I do a decent commute each day on a mix of country lanes and fast A roads where both the above add comfort.

It's possible to fit the RLS and not use it for wipers, just the auto lights/CH/LH functionality if the wipers side annoys you ;)

I think auto lights is a prerequisite if you retrofit highbeam assist, at least mine only works in the 'auto' position'.

Hey guys finally getting around to installing the RLS as recommended by @langers2k on me FL Octavia VRS (waiting on parts) and have a small question. I am confused about which poly-urethane glue to go for? I priced the original VW (d 180 kd2 a1) one from TPS this morning and it is coming in at £30 incl VAT :o and am assuming the bigger kits (da 004 600 a2 2k) will be £50.

So I was wondering are there any other aftermarket ones out there that would do the same job but cheaper? I don't fancy paying VW £30 for small amount of glue which is probably repackaged aftermarket.
