Winter Tyres on steel wheels - advice please

Featured Replies

Hello!

I need some advice please.  I have an Octavia (2014) and i would like to buy winter tyres on steel wheels.  I've found a set on MyTyre - which is much cheaper than my local Skoda Garage.  The key question is - do i need to purchase new wheel nuts that are specific for steel wheels?  I've found conflicting advice online.

Thanks!

You do have to check the bolt length and the seating of the bolt in the wheel works ok. Maybe ok maybe not.

I bought steelies for my superb from a Skoda dealer and used the original alloy wheel bolts ok.

Same original bolts are working OK with second hand VW alloys now.

Yep should be ok.

Pretty sure VW only have one type of wheel bolts for their cars. Saves money.

OEM Skoda spare wheels are steel and use original bolts if you are worried about taper/radius seated bolts?

The oem rims have ball head bolts. For other rim (both steel and alu) check the appropriate version, which may vary depending on the make.

In my case I finished with 2nd set of bolts for winter as the other rims are made for conical heads.

Other issue may be the head size - my father had an accident (wheel literally came off) after alu rims were fixed with nuts from steel rims (smaller) on his Mondeo.

I've been using MyTyre steels with winters for the last 5 years with no problems. Standard spare wheel is also steel so OEM bolts are fine with both.
