A year in

Featured Replies

So the supplying dealer sent me a happy birthday message for my car over the weekend. Which was nice. Anyway the car is a year old, just under 14k and although I still find it a bit dull it really is overall very good.

150 tdi manual SE business estate. Still averaging about 47 mpg overall, only problems have been coolant warning twice, regular tyre pressure warnings, sticking drivers door, chrome trim coming off passenger side rear door, Apple car play falling over each week and the cars inability to remember my driving seat position. None of them are major issues obviously.

Have learnt to like the acc, dab/Apple car play are great, economy is best I've ever had in a similar sized car and the inside is showing no real signs of wear (not so much the outside)

It had its first trip to a dealer last week which was slightly less satisfactory. No fault found with coolant system, didn't have the replacement chrome trim in stock (despite agreeing months in advance they would), drivers door not sticking anymore but panel gap you can stick your fingers in now, didn't have any tyres in stock (again despite asking for) and their Valeter was off sick so it wasn't washed. I know the last point is a bit petty but because of the chrome trim and tyres not being done combined with this I left feeling a bit underwhelmed by the visit and have to go back again.

As a serial car changer every time I get a bit bored of the superb I remind myself that it only costs £179 a month which is less than a Ford Fiesta.

Updated. Never see this when using mobile site so completely forgot to update.

How much mileage have you done in 12 months to warrant new tyres?

Just under 14k when they were changed today. 17 inch conti's and we're down to 2mm. I live in a rural area up a steep hill so they tend to spin a fair bit at the front plus I drive enthusiastically. I was a little bit disappointed with that mileage but it's not too bad. Have gone for hankook Ventus prime 3's this time, reasonable reviews and £30 cheaper each than the conti's. With a bit of luck they'll last till it goes back to Skoda this time next year.

I'm running 19s with Contis from the factory - over 20k and still 4mm remaining.

I also drive quite enthusiastically but 70% of my mileage is just motorway running

That's pretty good. Despite running at lowest pressures recommend mine wore in the middle and had 4mm left at the edges. I'm going to run the new ones even lower to try and even it out this time

18" wheels, 33k with 2.5mm remaining

I've also had mine a year now (well, 29th December to be exact)

I've covered nearly 18k of commuting through the peak district on A and B roads and my tyres are just about ready for changing, which I will have done on the first service.

How much was the service and tyres?

I've also had to contact vwfs to double my mileage allowance from 10k a year to 20k a year, which has seen my payments rise from £179 to £234 per month for the next 12 months, which is about half what it would cost to pay the excess mileage charge of 6p a mile at the end of the contract. At the time of ordering the car my commute was half what it was when I finally got my hands on it.

Interesting, I may contact vw's then as mine will be 10k over the mileage limit after two years, may be cheaper for me to up the monthly payment than pay the excess mileage.

Service not done yet but quoted £289

I put on Hankook ventus prime 3 tyres at £85 each. The stock conti's were quoted at £159 each at skoda and £135 at my local tyre dealer. The hankooks are just as good in my opinion after a few hundred miles, certainly not £50 worth worse anyway.

I've just gone past 22.5k and I'm at about 3-3.5mm on the factory 19" Pirelli rubber. The rears have got loads of meat left on them. 70% motorway and I'm not the world's slowest driver by any means. I'll change them after Christmas as the fronts spin up all too easily already.

I've found the Pirellis to be a little noisy so I'll try something else. The kerb protection edge is good on them though. It's come to the rescue a few times now.

Suspect my difference is that only 30% of my mileage is on the motorway. Most of it is up and down single track country lanes covered in mud and cow sh!t so I do end up spinning the wheels a lot.

My wife burnt through her BMW rear tyres in 9k so guess I should be thankful for 14k out of mine.

Oh dear, now I'm really sad, my dealer inexplicably appears to have forgotten to send me my birthday card - or could it be because they don't love me anymore, after I decided not to trust them with the servicing?
