Xenons - Why so dear?

Featured Replies

Sounds to me like xenons are good for the owner, maybe not so good for the oncoming competition!

Of course the colour change is because of the "closing" speed - blue shift coming towards you, red shift going away!! [Yes, that IS a joke - it only noticeably happens travelling at a good proportion of the speed of light - bl**dy Ferraris!!]

And if Lady E is THAT dangerous in a temper, my next car's a Centurion tank.

It’s turning into a proper science lecture this thread. Colour temperatures, relativistic effects and so forth. Think I used to be grumpy in my Physics lessons as well! Anyway, here’s something that has puzzled me (apart from why do I turn green when I’m vexed…..perhaps I’m part Incredible Ninja Turtle?....) I have heard, here I go again, that one good reason for Cars like the Octy only having dipped Xenons, is that if you flash regularly (yes I did mean the Car lights) it can burn/wear out the starter motors on the lights quicker or even cause the lights to fail slightly earlier than would otherwise be the case.

As for the tank matter, I got a day out in a Challenger II tank a couple of years ago. The ride is superb although the noise is ear splitting. It was fab! As were the guys to took me out in it;) . Why can’t I get a normal date like everyone else???? Grrrrrrrrr, oh heck, it’s starting again……

But driving a tank around would certainly put it over those school run 4 x 4's. Or you could be like our local oddity and drive the front half of a US truck as big as a bus!

I think the main reason you only get xenons on dipped beam is because there'd not be much point spending the extra for full beam as well when halogens do the job adequately as there is no beam pattern on full beam' date=' it's just 'chuck as much light out as possible'. if you had xenons on full beam as well it'd require another set of ballasts and ignitors virtually doubling the cost.

For those that dont know, xenons require a ballast to raise and regulate the voltage supplied to them, the ignitors give an initial punch of 50,000 volts (yep, fifty thousand) to 'ignite' the bulbs and then the ballast regulates roughly 30,000 volts to keep the lights on, there is no filament in an HID (or xenon) bulb, which is why they aren't as susceptable to vibration as halogen bulbs and supposedly last the life of the vehicle. The voltage creates an electrical arc inside the bulb that heats up the Xenon gas and produces the bright white light.

You see, this is why I

Mr. Eubank - did I mention Mr. Eubank? Do I want him round here with his truck and two fists. Nah, must be two other guys!! (As it happens he's just gone bust and apparently the truck is worth $100,000 of saleable asset, so it has to go - Thank God!)

Turned into a BIZARRE thread this one

Just got in from work, could have done with some Xenons on the drive back:censored:, and re-read last nights thread. Think I was on planet Wonga! :orb_bonk:Although, I like this thread and wonder if I can adopt it??:couple: :orb_be_mi

I've heard of "Adopt a Highway", but a thread? Yep, bizarre is right!!!

My little chest swells with pride for having started a thread which now has a life of its own. Yes Lady Elanore, you may (even though single) adopt it if you promise to bring it up properly and one day launch it into the great outside world capable of holding its own while showing due respect to its elders and betters (i.e. me).

I keep tapping the heels of my shoes together but nothing's happening. Please take me back to the real world, please.

I dunno! Adopting threads, and red shoes - sounds like yah'all should be living in Brighton!!!

And johnnyc, hmmm, a secret agent who has The Ninja Turtles for his sig. Careful with those red shoes, they might just work….

I didn't say my shoes were red your ladyship. Just that they didn't work.

Now that I have my nice new shiny Willberpog I have one query about his headlights. I ticked the Xenon box and although I love the brightness of the dipped beams, they seem to wobble over rough roads. I don

I've noticed that too but I dont actually think its the lights, i'm pretty sure its just the road surface that makes it look like they are wobbling, dont know why but it must be something to do with the extra light they throw out, makes the undulations in the road surface stand out more, hence when your moving it sometimes looks like the lights are wobbling?

Xenon bulbs are

Shame about the full beam really. Literally pale in comparisonto the Xenon dippped beam.

I thought it was just me, there seems to be like a dull spot at the line where the Xenon's and the Full beams meet. I actually kinda thought it was because full beams were too high but I now thinks it's because the difference is so great.

I think I'll get some Phillips Blue Vision bulbs, that reminds me I must change the parking light ones, they look a bit cheap turned on beside the Xenons :) .
