Pressure at oil filler cap

Featured Replies

Been oil around the cap for while now andnits new cap. Today after putting alternator back in just noticed there is a good bit of blow coming out filler cap and bit at dip stick and a little smoke.

Cant remember this much or noticicng this before...

Im guessing this is a bad sign.soon as i googled i read 'valve stems'

Any suggestions?

Blocked crank case breather?

My first thought was blocked crank breather too.

Blocked crank case breather?

That the elbow under the manifold?

Put new one in not long ago so doubt it but can check

Could a catch can being full cause a sort of blockage in breather system?

When changed the elbow i did notice a lot of gunk in that pan where it comes out of.tried clean it out best i b could

Could that be the problem aswel??

Yes! I had this on my mkI. The can filled up with an oil/water emulsion that was like mousse and gummed everything up.

In colder monthes (sept - april) its important to empty your OCC on a regular basis (every 3-4 months).

Just been checking my records, i have collected about 230-250 ml in the can at this time of the year comprising a mixture of water and oil vapour.

Another big plus fitting a OCC you use 19mm I/D pipes not those stupid 8mm ones that are fitted in the factory so it breathes better and there is less chance of a blockage and resulting crank case pressurisation. Remember the engine is a "closed system" there are no vents to atmosphere like in the old days so any pressure build up in the sump will look for an escape route.

Emptied my OCC and lovely yellow water poured everywhere. I assume that's what your meant to get from them?

I think a clogged crank case breather can give those symptoms!

Yes, I usually see a straw coloured very smelly watery liquid, imagin that getting sucked back into the turbo intake, coating the impeller, getting into the intercooler, coating the walls of the charge pipes, sensors, throttle butterfly etc.

I should of seen this coming. I think the first time I checked the catch can after fitting i was surprised to see as you say, a lemon mousse in the pipes and it was insanely sticky.

The Can itself seems to just fill with Watery oil but the pipes i expect are gonna be jammed up with this gunk.

Ill get onto cleaning them out and see how it goes then.

Is there any way of preventing this from building up or is it just a case of check regularly??

Just check it regularly. As long as the can doesn't fill right up the hoses should stay clear.

Will be interesting to see how much they are bunged up and after cleaning out will it mean no more oil leaking out, either from filler cap or down side of the block. I changed the rocker gasket a while ago and was grand but after months started getting oil down beside the combi valve and temp sensor. Now thinking was the pressure gradually building as the breather system became worse.

Anyway,thanks for the pointers

Sounds like a plan. Thanks
