Buying our new Yeti

Featured Replies

Why pay all that extra for an Amundsen when a Bolero with Smartlink suits your needs?

Vehicle was on stock so already had it fitted. Didn't pay for it.

Certainly wouldn't pay a for a factory fit unit when smartlink is £150.

The disadvantage of smartlink is the limitation of your smartphone screen size surely? I use my phone for very little more than texts, email and phone calls, and the small screen would be a very poor substitute for a proper display. I'm not prepared to buy a bigger phone.

Not sure what you are saying? Surely with smartlink the size of the phone screen is irrelevant as it links your phone to the car's touchscreen which is the same size with or without nav.

.......and you still have to look down there

Aah. Thanks, I hadn't appreciated that so got a bit confused. I've now watched the video. My phone isn't supported anyway though, Windows Lumia.

So I'd have to buy another phone to start with, and the data usage aspect would concern me.

My son simply uses his phone with the google maps app for nav

Not for me though, too small........although he now has the latest google phone which is probably a good option for the optically challenged

Thanks Ryeman.... I always have my wife with me, and we're both drivers. Not allowed out without her

Pam Ayres......

I have a little Satnav, it sits there in my car

A Satnav is a driver's friend, it tells you where you are.

I have a little Satnav, I've had it all my life,

It's better than the normal ones- my Satnav is my wife.

It gives me full instructions, especially how to drive,

At sixty miles an hour it says... You're doing sixty five!

It tells me when to stop and start, and when to use the brake,

And tells me that it's never safe for me to overtake.

It tells me when a light is red and when it goes to green,

It seems to know instinctively just when to intervene.

It lists the vehicles in front and all those to the rear,

And taking this into account it specifies my gear.

I'm sure no other driver has so helpful a device,

For when we lock the car at home it still gives me advice.

It fills me up with counselling, each journey pretty fraught.

So why don't I exchange it and get a better sort?

Ah well you see, it cleans the house, makes sure I'm properly fed,

It washes all my shirts and things and keeps me warm in bed!

Despite all these advantages and my tendency to scoff,

I only wish that now and then I could turn the b....r off!

^^^^^^ a friend with dubious benefits?.

Not going there :-)

Data usage is not an issue.

You can make googlemaps available offline, any areas you want. You download these to your phone via wifi at home so when driving you are using mas from your phone and gps, no data involved. And no worries over a dropped signal. You can also set an update via wifi so the maps are constantly updated when connected to wifi.

The only data you use is for live traffic information but as this is just an add on data file it's very small. I have the whole UK downloaded to my phone and use googlemaps and live traffic daily. Looking at my monthly data usage the Weather App uses more data than Google Maps. :)

He needs to get a car with Android Auto, save his Dad's eyes :)

Is their any benefit to getting Smartlink on a Yeti with the Amundsen? I'd definately add it if I didn't have the built in Nav, but does it add any real benefit over the Amundsen, or are there any notable carplay apps that make it worth while?

Well for me the main benefit is Googlemaps traffic and more up to date maps. But there are others.

The voice search uses googles servers and is excellent, it's far more accurate and usable than the Skoda in built system. For instance if you dont know the address of the place you are going to you can just press the voice button and say something like "Navigate to Porth Beach Tourist Park near Newquay" It will use google to review your voice command, locate the address and then set a route to where you want to go.

Used this last week when I was meeting some work colleagues at a restaurant, no idea where it was just the name. Google Maps found it with just one voice request.

And if you use music apps like Spotify or Amazon Music you can use these through Android Auto as well as the music on your phone.

For phone calls again you can use voice control for calls and texts.

Thanks, sounds like it may not be worth it for me as I don't.use Nav very often or use spotify. Does the standard skoda voice control work ok for answering calls?

Off on a tangent, but if you plan to carry stuff in the bag, or dog(s) in there, then spec the load protection net from the factory, as it's a bit of a faff to retro fit and is a genius piece of design.

Thanks for all this extra information.

One thing I have picked up on that some of you probably aren't aware of is that Windows Lumia phones don't support Google maps, which has been a pain for ages.

I am going to update to an Android phone soon anyway, because Microsoft have pulled out of their previous Nokia tie up, to the disgust and fury of Lumia users worldwide, and are already dropping support for many of even the most necessary apps from their already poor number, so it has to go.

Currently looking at the One plus3T as an option.

We are due to test drive and order our new car very soon now.

Thanks again for all your help.

My son (a network engineer for a com co) has the latest Google phone which is a bit bigger than a Sony and looks like a viable satnav replacement with good battery life and great pics, maybe a tad exy though.........FWIW.
