Driving in Snow.

Featured Replies

I know. But you dont need deep snow for not wanting the box to change gear. All it takes is a hill and low friction.

With 4x4, D all you need. With FWD you sometimes want it to stick in a gear untill you are clear.

I drive Various Automatic 4x4's and only drive 2 pedal cars and they stay in Auto in Snow and Mud and only go into gear manually when descending.

As to DSG's which are automated manuals the choices are there for what works for the individual, i have never held one in gear.

We do the opposite, I never go manual downhill, only in steep and slippery inclines (when in a fwd).

After I got the 4x4 octavia I just plow through.

Very true, but then you get different snows and different DSG's with the Petrols or Diesels and then different again with FWD or Part time AWD.

It is good that there is choices.

Mostly in the UK drivers are on roads with ploughed and treated roads and seldom breaking tracks through fresh snow of any depth.

And you get way better traction on dry powder at -20C than on wet snow at -2C regardless of tyre type.

That is very true. Wet snow at 0C is the Worst.

-2 snow lying as we know is preferable usually to snow and temps of 2*oC and more.

As it is it is all good fun as long as everyone has some idea and just keeps on moving.

Most doesnt seem to have a problem keeping in motion, stopping and turning seems to be a bigger problem :p

Maybe up in the land of thought, but down ,there brainwashed into thinking that the more throttle ,and faster the wheels spin ( even if going nowhere) , the more chance they have of going anywhere. We have the equivalent of the "quick & the dead", this time on hils it's the too slow and too fast. To low and they loose inertia+traction early.Too fast and they get over the brow usually out of control .

Personally I prefer virgin snow where the idiots have not trod.
