Update Columbus Bluetooth in 2011 Octavia

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have recently purchased a 2011 Octavia RS and would like to update the firmware on the columbus. My maps seem to be fine so I don't mind not updating them but I'd like to update the bluetooth to hopefully get track names from my phone (avrcp). I've tried searching for info but it is quite hard to know what is applicable for my model and especially since I'm in Australia. Does anyone know what the go is - after putting my VIN into the skoda website, it says I need to go to a dealer for updates but surely there is an alternative to that. I did see in one thread someone saying certain methods cannot be discussed on this forum but perhaps someone knows where I could find some further info?

Cheers

Bluetooth isn't part of the Columbus, it's a separate module, usually under the drivers seat. I'm not sure updating the Columbus would give you what you want as it's possibly a feature of the Bluetooth module rather than the Columbus itself.

Anyway, without knowing what software your Columbus is on already, it's hard to say what you'd be best updating it with. Press and hold the "Setup" button until the unit shows the next screen (a few seconds) and see if it gives you "Version Information". If not then try holding for about 15 seconds and see if the developer menu shows up after the second screen. You want to be looking for the SW version (SW 2*** or 3*** or suchlike.

As above its the bt box that does that.

I forget what model no. Mine is but it does track names, rsap so you get SMS messages etc plus WiFi too.

If you search my posts it's written somewhere.

Oh ok, I didn't know that. I'm sure I have gotten to the menu with the version but when I tried just before it only showed settings for AM and FM and no system information (even after continuing to hold the setup button)..

SMS info on the MFD would be amazing! I'll have a look at your history, thanks

If your unit didn't show "Version Information" then you're on a fairly old software version. If you pull the unit out and read the label on top of it, you'll see the SW info there, and also the date of manufacture and HW numbers would help.

However, as said if all you want is your Bluetooth track info to show then I'd be looking at the module for that first, and then see how you get on. No point risking a bricked Columbus chasing something you don't need to.

I'm sure last time I did get into the version information part.. I did see someone say that sometimes it doesn't shop up and to lock the car and try again hours later (not sure how that would work but I'll see if it works anyway).

That's true - can I just update the software on my module or would I need to replace the hardware? Thanks for the help and sorry for the noob questions!

I bought it from eBay just after getting the car.

It enables all functions mentioned above

I have an RNS310 (Amundsmen) and bt module 5KO 035 730 D and phone function works fine and I can play bt songs but I would like to be able to see track names and also skip the song with the head unit instead of touching my phone while driving... would the kit you mentioned above be better for me to get these features? thanks.
