Life is far to short to worry about a winged arrow.

Might be racist though (I think all the American football teams are being re named in case Red Indians get upset.Honest)

I did not know what Skoda was just before I bought my car, never heard of it. I knew my friend drove one, the white Fabia, and back then, I remember thinking that the grille was bloody ugly, but the interiors were neat..a bit on the plasticky side, but neat. I especially love(d) the AC vents and the way the shut...very cool.

Then I'd heard a 2.0 model came out...so I just went to the dealer, saw the balck with red interior, plus manual, and bought it :D

So yeah...I don't really have anything to be embarassed about. Hardly anybody knows about the old Skoda rep in this region, so I'm saved the Skoda jokes. The new rep is they're outstanding cars for what they're worth and more.

I'd be more embarrased to own a VW (or a BMW 1 Series) - all those people thinking I'm so stupid I'd pay several thousand pounds for a badge

gayle and i must be very imbarrased then, owning a bora and a4 respectivly:rolleyes:

Rob.

'Tis just a badge. I buy cars for the fact that I like them. I drove a Hyundai Coupe before I got the Octy so I am definitley not bothered about badges

I'm not embarassed one bit, everyone recogises that for the most part, it is essentially a VW in drag.

Johnny boy, what's your thoughts on the badge, seeing as you started the poll!?

Chris

A 2.5 V6 Vectra raced away off a set of lights on a nearby Dual carriageway, so I obliged at the next set (empty & safe).

He had a good look at the Skoda badge sitting proudly on the BACK ! :D

Even better when they say " God...............It's a Diesel".

Never forget that Skoda has a long pedigree of engineering. OK, so before the VAG take over they were laughed at. I still talk to w*nkers who say "I don't care how good they are I could never drive a car with a Skoda badge".

If you drive a car only for the badge you may never be satisfied until you get a Bugatti ;)

Funny thing is that until now I have always not had much inclination to buy any of VAGs products (can't afford a TT :( ). A strange concept 'badge engineering' which dates back to the days when Austin drivers would not drive a Morris, and even earlier in the British Motorcycle industry (AJS=Matchless).

I think the 'Bird' is quirky and historic - wear it with pride :)

Apparently from what I recall, in the past they used to make ship engines or something along the lines of that, and were the few best in the world back then.

They've made allsorts, Skoda were brilliant. They made the guns for the third reich - and they wouldn't have been **** now would they??

They got starved of money after the war because czech went into the soviet union which was communist so didn't believe in any kind of independence. This meant they had to make budget cars - getting them a bad reputation. Once they were free of this VAG bought them out, built them a new factory and gave them plenty of money to make decent cars. They had all the engineering skills, just needed the money.

No - I'm not embarrassed to own a Skoda at all. I wouldn't have bought one if I was!! Yes, some narrow minded people still make fun and when they do that just makes me like my car even more!! Most people do realise now that skodas are no longer a joke...

My thoughts on the badge are as follows.

When I was a kid growing up in Liverpool, everyone whom I knew thought (and verbally said) that Skoda cars were rubbish. We all know that the marque had loads of history, but when you are young and impressionable, fashion was King. The vougue at the time was Ford Capri 3.0S, Escort Mexico, then XR3, you know the usual boys cars that you had either models of, or posters of supercars.

Unfortunately Skoda did look a little shabby in comparison so it's no wonder that most people (big most) had this impression. We are all very impressionable when we're young.

The badge has not been taken seriously until now and in all honesty, rightfully so.

The previous models simply did not cut the mustard as far as driver dynamics, comfort, and most importantly (to joe public) the looks.

Please don't start an argument up (it's been done to death) about how great Skoda was in the War etc. etc. as i've said before, I never really liked them before but they have done wonders recently (with financial help) from Parent company V.W.

They really are a revalation today and I would love to be a fly on the wall at the V.W corporate meetings of thier subsiduries (Porsche, Skoda, Audi, Seat etc) and see the faces of the rest of the marques when the polls show Skoda MILES ahead of the others in terms of growth, customer satisfaction etc.

Well done Skoda, quite simply an unbelievable success story. :)

difinatly not ashamed! one of the reasons i bought it to be honest, why be like everyone else a buy a vw!!

  • 3 months later...

Agree with what Jonnyboy said, certainly a turnaround since the Favorit days let alone the decades before that (sorry Daverapid) although I have a fondness for the little coupes.

My mum is a badge snob. Woudln't consider the Fabia although of course I tried my best to help her spend wisely - just ordered a brand new Polo S 1.4TDi 70, five door, black, much like my Fabia vRS although it's missing a cylinder :) The other thing her car has in common with mine is the price ;) (ok well ignore the fact I have leather and it would be the same)

Personally I'll swap a badge for an extra cylinder and 60hp anyday :D

Furthermore, from an aesthetic standpoint I prefer the Fabia over the newly facelifted Polo, I think it looked better as it was with the four round lights.

Polo GTI looks the mutts and makes the fabia look old as does the Ibiza FR. New Furby best pull something out the bag imho.

No badge snob here I'm afraid!

Pi$$ed myself laughing at 2 broken down motors on the M60 on Friday:

suburu

BMW

I like the badge and the laurels give it a sporting twist!
