octavia abs does not act while braking

Featured Replies

Do someone have such a problem?

ASR is on. But ABS seems fail on slippery road. No light advice fail abs. But brake block the wheels.

Any suggestion?

Welcome.

Best go get it checked out and repaired, not a good safety feature if it does not operate and help in an emergency keeping traction while braking and allowing you to steer.

Is this on black top asphalt & not on ice?

If I'm understanding you correctly, this should be impossible, unless someone has removed or disabled the ABS warning light that should appear when you first turn the key to position 2.

Either way, you need someone with a good code reader to investigate for ABS faults.

how hard did you push the pedal and are you completely sure?

it does take quite a bit to trigger ABS on the Octy, but it's quite subtle compared to some I've driven. What exactly was your test?

Also what speed were you travelling at, ABS doesn't work at low speeds AFAIK

Are you sure it doesn't work at low speeds? I recently had a chance to test mine on a patch of black ice (outside the public road, thankfully). I had 5-10 km/h and it still kicked in (all 4 wheels were on ice when braking). I was very happy it also managed to get going again from standstill, had not thought of that before :)

Older, and mechanical, systems are inhibited at low speed.

I know a few years ago there was a speed below which ABS didn't activate, but that may have changed with modern stability systems

I think there is also a self diagnosic system for the ABS.A warning should be given if the ABS has failed. My BMW cycles through a test each time the ignition is turned on.

ABS works at all speeds, has done for at least the last 10 years on VAGs, or more to the point, if it stops it's at 2km/h to bring the car to a complete stop. I've had several extremely slippery stops today, and every time the ABS has been working to the stop point or imperceptibly before.

Most people don't push the pedal hard enough, they have the seat too far back. Check you can push it all the way down with your seat in its normal position. ABS failure would imply all wheels locking, no wheels locked but no ABS implies you're not pressing hard enough.

Offski : it was on black top asphalt.

@ brettikivi: I was about 40/50 kmh and pushed hard the brake pedal simulating a 'panic stop'. I tried that 2 times and the result ws the same. i pressed very hard. It has been the first time I did this experience, cause in the past I did not find a safe situation to do the test. Any way may be it was not appropriate.

But I ask: how could we define the correct test to verify the empiric functioning test of ABS? Are condamned to go to mechanical, cannot we do a selftest?

speed is high for this test..cruise at 10-20km/h on slippery surface, kick the pedal fast.

I did it today, you can feel it kicking and hear it.

anyway I did it I can make sure you the car slipped for more than 2-3 meters. i think this is not equivocable: abs is not on. Or is completely disabled.

next stop ... dealer service. I hope it's not something big. Please share once you have the diagnostics checks.

Just a thought - you say in the OP "ASR is on", do you mean the ASR light is on, or off?

I'd missed that. Also, as a supplementary, does the mk3 still have switchable ASR?

Don't know about the Octavia, but my MY2016 Superb does.

Yes, even if there isn't a switch down by the gear stick it's selectable on the infotainment screen.

The light is off (otherwise there mast be a problem). The ASR like system is on, chekin into infotainment/CAR
