Columbus and the cold, frosty weather

Featured Replies

Is it possible for the Columbus to be affected by very cold weather. Yesterday when we had a hard frost here in Lancashire the Columbus started up to the radio screen but didn`t work, no sound. None of the physical or screen buttons worked apart from pushing the on/off button which didn`t help. Bluetooth worked fine.

Eventually, some time later during another trip out, it worked but it took a good few minutes to come on and this is still the case today. Is it on its way out?

They can be affected by cold but a normal frost shouldn't harm them.

Sounds more like a fault somewhere. My first reaction would be the hard drive failing as this can cause funny issue and slow start ups.

Feel free to contact me mate if you have any issues.

Thanks mate, is it ok if I ring you later. I still have your number

Yep, just call. If I don't answer I'll ring you back.

Cheers.

Did you get anywhere with this? I've just had a similar experience after last night's very cold weather.

The radio did start working pretty quickly however the unit refused to play CDs, even after a couple of hours solid driving through the night. It can clearly detect the cd is present and even read the track listing off an appropriate cd! I should add these were all originals I've played in the car before.

Cheers and sorry if I've hijacked someone else's thread ;-)

Can you play any music off the sd card or from the in built hard drive?

You`ve just reminded me. Mine wouldn`t come on again the other day in the morning but later on in the afternoon it worked fine, except for taking a while to start up. Its working fine now

If you want to swap it over for another one mate, just let me know.

After a long cold spell a couple of weeks ago when I didn't use the car the Columbus didn't start until the car was well warmed up. This has happened in previous cold winters so I'm not sure if it's a fault or a protection mechanism to prevent damage to the hard drive. Either way I don't worry about it.

I supplied the one to Ashfan, and I wouldn't like to think he was having any issues with it. I have another here which is in my Yeti suffering the colds with no issues at all, in fact I've not had any others which have shown these symptoms.

Sorry Andy for not getting back to you. My daughter gave birth to our first grandchild today so I've been a bit distracted. I'll ring you in the morning.

If in your opinion it's just a glitch then I'll live with it as it's working fine now.

Congratulations mate. Hope all are doing okay.

As regards the Columbus, it's entirely up to you. You're welcome to a replacement, or you can be a test bed and see when it happens and what the symptoms / consequences are. If it is related to the cold weather then I've not had any instances of it on the one I'm running here in the Yeti, and we've had temps down below freezing quite a few times.

In any case, just let me know if you want it changing out.

Cheers.

Mine's playing up too and I've been wondering if cold is a factor - or it's just knackered :)

A few weeks ago in December, possibly the coldest day of the year, it just wouldn't do anything - the screen was all black and no sound was coming out, but the maxidot display was active and it was happily changing tracks. The next time I used the car, back to normal.

Nav seems broken, it thinks I'm about half a mile away from where I actually am. I did buy a cheap and cheerful gps antenna off Ebay but haven't got around to trying it yet.

Finally last week it refused to read the DVD in the drive. This actually meant no Toy Story for the millionth time on a family day out so was a blessing in disguise.

I think I'll wait until the weather warms up a bit and decide what to do if the problems remain.

GPS antenna should probably cure the fault with it not knowing where it's at. As regards the black screen, again I'm not sure.

Hi,

I don't have any music on the hard drive; I'll see if I have a suitable SD card to try that when I'm back next week.

Cheers,

Steve

If you have music from the radio but nothing else, then the radio board will most likely be fried I'm afraid. I can possibly replace it if you send me the unit.

Nope, I could get music from Bluetooth also.

I'll see what happens when I get back to the car this evening....

Cheers,

Steve

very odd and last week i was leaving for work at 5am in-5 and had no issues at all by the time id cleared the screen the columbus had booted up and was working perfectly.

no different to any other weather.

To be fair, I've never tested this particular fault with Bluetooth streaming, so I dunno if it affects that as well. Copy some music from the SD card onto the hard drive and see if it plays that.

My Columbus doesn't like the cold - the screen is very unresponsive for about 20 mins until it warms up. As the screen warms up, it does randomly switch stations or change tracks.

I don´t have a Columbus, but I have a Bolero, due to the fact that the display technology is the same then we all have this issue.

When it´s cold , starting from -5 to -7 it takes time to make the screen become responsive. First it may be slow or not working at all (touch-screen capability) but for Bolero it usually takes up to 2-3 minutes to be at full capacity.

So, I dont see a problem there normal reaction from this kind of technology, you can´t do nothing cause it is not meant to be working in cold environments. All the other functionalities (bluetooth, notifications and stuff like that) work perfectly. The only thing that I dont like is that you can´t do everything with the buttons on your headunit. Escspecially when it comes to Apple CarPlay / Android Auto, where some functionalities and not doable without touch-screen.

So, back to the car on Monday night and since then it has been like there was never any problem...

Mine is back to playing DVDs again, and I've only had it fail to start the one time. I now wonder if the DVD possibly had condensation on it as generally my car just sits outside looking pretty, it rarely gets used.

Also pleased to report I fitted the new GPS antenna today and it is working like a champ - good news for the £6 it cost me!
