Windows 10 RANT

Featured Replies

TBH a wrong password should result in the data on the PC/tablet/phone being unreachable otherwise what's the point?

Ok if the machine fks up that's infuriating but they're shouldn't be back doors only backups.

Not sure about win 8/10 but 7 and below you could easily reset the password on a windows box using a hirens disk (other tools available), OS X was even easier as all you needed to do was boot into single user mode and issue a passwd although it messes up keychains, Linux you can chroot as well.

On new installs I'm lead to believe Apple have started turning on whole drive encryption by default which would mean single user mode wouldn't really help but I'm not sure how accurate that is.

A lot of companies (I used to work for PCWorld "tech guys" and they wouldn't let you even attempt such things - I believe they're not even allowed to open a desktop up on site anymore.) won't allow their staff to help in the case of lose passwords as DPA and other legal issues can arise - easier to say no than varify you've not nicked it.

As long as encryption isn't used you can pretty easily get into a machine - even if it's just to get files as long as you have local access.

I would suspect the OP may have run into the issue where Win10 changes the local account password to reflect the Microsoft account password it's attached to - I've seen it a few times and isn't really a bug more a "undocumented feature".

the easy way to get to "admin" bits is to right click the start menu flag in place of the normal left,

Apparently ccording to the tech guy I spoke with at Microsoft, the password debacle is common...you select a password and continue with the set up only for windows to decide after the fact that it actually doesn't like your password and locks you out,

K:)

If you do not want or need a password on your Win10 system then search for how to use 'netplwiz' (its an MS app) there is a simple way to disable passwords and boot the system without one.

I assume this disables existing passwords, as you do not need it to set up a passwordless account at initial install?

What I am unwilling to accept is that even with Windows 10 Pro I cannot choose whether to accept an update or not - given M$ history of poorly tested patches that cause either things to stop working (e.g. webcams) or even BSOD this, for me, is an essential requirement and not a nice-to-have.

There's a (unofficial but functioning) workaround, though:

It’s the same old thing the vast majority of people do not like change

I repair PC’s for a living. I must have installed Win 10 on over 200 PC’s apart from a bit of graphics

driver glitches earlier on there were very few other problems.

Where I did see a lot grief was on the upgrade side, I would highly recommend a fresh installation via usb stick

freely available from the Microsoft upgrade site. The biggest moan I get from customers is the updates,

it’s funny they are quite happy to accept Android or Apple updates.

I have had only 2 customers that requested a return to Windows 7 and I obliged them at no extra cost.

To summarise I think Windows 10 (apart from Microsoft descending into the same realms as Apple and Google on

leeching info from you) is a very workable operating system.

Bets are in 5 years’ time people will look fondly on it.

Not me personally, I wasn't even mad keen on XP. I stand by the conviction that Microsoft have never bettered Win2K/2k3.

This implies that in 5 years' time the microsoft programs will be even more disliked than Windows 10  :D

XP SP0 was dreadful from memory although it supported wifi so was in ways a step up from 2k.

Frankly I don't see there being that much difference between any of the recent Versions although having not used it for ages win 7 is a bit irritating. 8 is fine (on my work laptop) and I actually quite like win 10 (on VMs and a basic machine in the house).

I use OEL for anything major other than gui browsing etc now.

I've done that, all it does is stop updates installing automatically but only at a time of your choosing - BUT (and it's a big but) you still cannot choose NOT to install an update that has been reported by other W10 users as potentially causing problems.

So unless anyone knows how I can tell W10 to hide an update (like XP, Vista, W7, W8 & W8.1 can) then I'll continue to avoid W10 unless I'm forced to have it.

It should just be a straightforward case of exporting to an HTML file, then importing that file into the new browser.

If that's not working, I'd suspect something else is up and causing conflicts.

Have managed to import the faves but apparently there is no way to move them to the left of the screen where I have been used to them for the last donkey's years!!! So I'm IE11 instead so all is good in my wee head but I'm sure the next thing that I go to do will then drive me over the edge!!!

IE11 is in Win 10 by default just type iexplore in the search box

Over the 'Edge'... ha ha, I see what you did there!!! :D

In Firefox you can set the Sidebar to display History or Bookmarks (Favourites) from the View menu, same as you would use View>Explorer Bar to do the same in IE11...

EDGE- I thought W10 had lost IE and used Edge instead.

Nope, still included as standard. Type "ie" in the search box and there it is, as a Desktop App, in all it's horror...

Never noticed- few times I used 10, I stuck on FF and got rid of potential problems.

I see Seven's days are numbered, you should have run the upgrade !!

I think most screwed installs stem from the PC in question rammed full of old ****e to start, I have noticed older machines dump a lot of manufacturer crap during the upgrade,  I've done a fair few ten upgrades and had very few issues, the driver support is fantastic compared to previous versions.

I did a XP install recently and it was a complete pain in tits, it took days to get updated and finding drivers was hard work, a fresh ten installs in the time it takes to make a cup of tea on a decent system.

I tried to create an XP VM recently but gave up in the end. Despite it being completely legit MS had turned off the authentication servers for XP so the damn thing wouldn't complete the install.

Anyway, W10 update problems...help is at hand

https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx

If you check the update log in W10 for where you've had problems you can download each patch individually using the KB numbers and install manually. Sorted my issues.

I hate the win10 auto updates ........really when I was wanting to quickly run the computer for email checks & shut off..........so it decides it wants to do auto fecking updates......

& I have Win10pro & turned everything off!......

Also it did a new build update, & now I have to try to remove Cortana, contact, maps, & all the other carp that reinstalled automatically when I have deleted it from the last build update!!

that really pees me off, get the system working fine & it auto overwrites that & installs carp ware again!!

I understand the need for a fresh new build auto update (patch on patch ain't good), but why can't we chose what bloat ware to have I'm on Pro FFS!!!

None of my updates have taken more than 90 seconds, really... and that's on a BT RuralBand connection of 0.7Mbps!!
