Tyre rating?

Featured Replies

This is linked to another thread "handling problems with 17"s". I was advised to get in touch with the people I had bought the wheels from as they had sold me wheels with v rated tyres instead of w rated. They are not too eager to help me out and have said that those tyres should be fine. Does anyone know why the vrs has w rated tyres and not v? Am hoping this will give me some help in getting the tyres replaced by them.

you MUST have W rated tyres, even your insurance may not be valid without! there are different characteristicts between w and v, different ways of handling heat build up, hence the different speed ratings, will prolly make a big difference! remember v is only rated to 150 mph, ask shifty if he'd drive his with 'v' rated tyres on!

The letter is a speed rating. Something like the max constant speed for ten munutes before the tire would give up or something.

I think W is 160ish mph. So a V would probably be fine, but as the car comes with W's you may have problems with insurance if anything happens. That alone should be a big concern.

If the insurance company says your accident was because you had unsuitable tyres then you'd have no real comeback.

Edit: ^ beat me to it...

ok thanks guys,I thoght maybe the w rated tyres would have a stronger sidewall hence the poor handling with v rated ones?

Sidewall strength is really determined by the load index of the tyre... but there are a lot of other structural and compound differences between speed ratings - obviously the lower the speed rating, the "cheaper" the tyre is made... or should I say, the higher the speed rating, the higher quality (and therefore expensive) the parts that make it up...

...not that I'm saying any perticular speed rating is inferior quality tho!!

Even so, the Fabia has W's for a reason... best stick to them!

Good advice, but the vRS can't do 160mph, can't do 150mph, so a 149mph rating, ie V, would in reality be fine, so anyone know why you need to have a W rated tyre on the car....... over cautious perhaps or other ?

the fabia vRS has a "theoretical" top speed of 157mph if you can pull max revs in 6th gear... a standard car cannot do this, but ask Shifty how fast he's had his! (or look it up in the top speed thread!)
