High power USB port diy install

Featured Replies

Hey People

Im in need of usb charging and the cigarette lighter usb sockets arent doing it for me.

I want a USB cable in my drivers glove box which i can pull out and plug into my phone (Sits in cradle mounted to window)

This will be much tidier and make me happy.

while im doing this i may aswell fit a USB port in the armrest too (Octavia vrs mk2).

Has any body done this?

Im after 2.1 Amp port's to accommodate fast charging on my galaxy S6.

So i require 12W power per socket.

I need recommendations on what people have used for 12v DC- 5V DC converters.

Or if they have just taken the internals out of a fast charger cigarette lighter charger.

Although what gauge wire would be best and fuse to be inline up to the 12v-5v converter or after converter. or both just to be safe :P

Cheers

Ryan

You can buy above kit on eBay.

Just buy a piggy back fuse holder and wire directly into fuse box

What fuse slot did you piggyback from?

Also how did you go about drilling the hole without damaging anything behind plastic in glovebox?

Do you have any links of charger kits on ebay?

remove the glovebox from the car and use a fuse thats only live on ignition, use a multimeter to test.

Was thinking of buying two of these and placing them in glove box and armrest.

Shall i just solder wires onto the chargers spring contacts or shall i try disassemble the outside case and solder directly onto the pcb inside?

I assume i could use the piggyback fuse holder in switch live fuse port and run two 5 amp cables from it to power each of the chargers?

I think MikeHolroyd, member on here, has done this on all of his cars;maybe not in the glovebox. Perhaps search his posts

This is mine in my Mk1

The switch behind the gearlever is so the unit isn't powered at all times, I just T'd into the wiring for the normal ciggy lighter in the centre console

When I had an Octavia, I put a USB charging cable in the top box along with a phone cradle. Could then all be hidden away.

I did this, but with a QI wireless charger, none of that pesky "plugging stuff in" nonsense. When the Octiva move on in the family, I did the same in the BMW. The beauty is not only being hidden away, but also hidden whilst driving.....no temptation to look at the phone at all ;);)
