2.0TDI MPG down after first service

Featured Replies

My (leased) 2015 Octavia has just had it's 1st service at 18K. Since getting it back the fuel economy is at least 5mpg down on comparable journeys, I've seen sub 50avg mpgs for the first time since it was new.

I assumed this was due to the emissions fix having been applied, however it would seem from the first reply that O3's weren't affected, so I've removed a load of junk from this first post. Considering this, the drop in mpg seems a tad odd, has anyone else experienced anything similar after what was essentially an oil and filter change?

EA189 is not fitted to the O3 Octavia. The 2.0 tdi is the EA288, which does not need an emissions fix to be applied.

I looked and am surprised that there's not reams of threads on here about the emissions scandal and the 'fix' being applied to peoples cars

If you have a spare week or two and you're not easily bored then have a look here.

Even though your car did not have The Fix carried out because your vehicle is not part of the Recall Action ask the Dealership to confirm if a Software Update was applied during the service.

Ask in writing and have them confirm in writing after the Technician that carried out the service has confirmed what was done.

Even though you lease a vehicle any Updates carried out should be made aware to you in case they affect the vehicles performance,

something like as DSG reset could easily catch out a driver leaving the Dealership.

Have you checked what the tyre pressures are at since the service was done, and reset if required and reset the TPMS?

As old as the hills this one.

Take a look in any of the other forums including the MkII Octavia and similar threads have been posted for years.

No one has managed to explain it though.

I'm getting mid 40's on average with the odd 48-50 IF I'm easy with my right foot....which is a real test of my restraint. My 1st service next week - I may be in the 30's after that then (company fuel card so not all bad!)!!

maybe different oil?

Mine is somewhat down on MPG as well.

I was blaming the service in late October but i suspect it might be the switch to winter diesel & colder weather that's the real culprit?

Mine went up after the first service.

The old thinner running in oil theory though would play havoc with the DPF on modern cars.

What used to make a huge difference to me on older cards however was that at about 15k miles the air filter is getting a bit blocked.

It's not changed until 40-60k miles these days, so replace that and you tend to see an improvement of a few MPG.

Worth a shot if you're handy with a screwdriver and know what you're doing.

I'm going to put it down to all the wet weather we had at that time. Now it's dry mpg has returned to about 53. I spend very little time in stop start traffic and generally do 8 mile journeys minimum.

Wet weather will definitely have an effect.

I did a longer country journey last week and was thinking I would get a really good mpg for the tank, but the whole run home was in heavy rain (really rare for Adelaide at this time of year, a bit like getting snow in London in June).

Despite compromising my cruising speed (didn't like the idea of overtaking trucks with my legal but still worn tyres in the wet) my consumption was down by at least 12% on normal.

I still got 900kms for the tank (extrapolated) but was hoping for my first 1000km.
