In order to replace the valve stem seals with the cylinder head left on, could you tell me what tool I need to compress the springs?

Also, do I need a specialised stem seal set of pliers or will a standard long nose pair be okay?

Additional info.

"specialised stem seal set of pliers" ? Do they have one for Felicia ? Skoda says to use a screwdriver and carefully lever off the valve stem seal. A needle nose pliers works too. Avoid scratching the valve stem.

 

For releasing the valve springs, I use a soft metal pipe and a hammer. I put the pipe over the spring disk then I apply a sharp blow with the hammer to the pipe. Plug the pipe with a piece of foam to avoid the spring keepers flying into your eye or on the other side of the room.

 

For installing the keepers I compress the valve springs using a cheap #20 open end spanner with a hole in it (see photo)

 

Note: if in fact you are not broke, you can buy any fancy compressing tool.

How long would it take, roughly, including removing cam/s and ancilliaries? Do you use a woodruff key or have you devised an alternative way?

I'd say the job takes me roughly 2 hours. We're talking about:

• removing the rockers assembly
• replacing the seals
• installing the rockers assembly
• setting the valves clearance

I don't understand what woodruff key you're talking about.

 

Note: Since removing the rockers assembly involves unscrewing 2 head bolts, you'll need a torque wrench. Some coolant might seep into the head bolt holes after removal. It is mandatory to dry any coolant before torquing the bolts. Alternatively you can drain the coolant before starting the job.

Do I have to take the camshaft off? I assume that I do because it'll be pressing on the valves. The woodruff key is something I've read about stopping the crank moving while working on it with the cam sprocket etc off. Am I talking rubbish?

The 1.3 is an OHV engine, so the camshaft is inside the engine block.  You'll just need to take the rockers off and remove the pushrods:

Yes. But if you get your hands on a Skoda service manual and study the Engine chapter the situation will improve.

Lol. Thanks for your help. I'm going to do it!! But first, the mot fails. Got some seals from europarts for £6 and will do it once it's mot'd and with an engine oil and gearbox oil change ( not the garage ).

This engine have AC or power steering. Those have 90A alternator with different mounting, which should be compatible with other VAG alternators.

I am about to install AC in my 1.3 MPI Felicia but i thought they all came with this alternator

Although the one in the picture of Aree looks like those more modern Bosh ones. The ones which came with the 1.6 l engine.   Its just interesting cause those seems to be  easier to find second hand.   I almost have everything together for the ac setup except the this alternator with the right 6pk pulley.

Yes, mounting is compatible with other VAG alternators from Bosch (Atleast that's what they say HERE). On the photo is alternator from Felicia 1.6.
