Brakes

Featured Replies

Hi.

I have had my Octavia vrs for about six weeks now from brand new. After about four weeks I noticed rust on the drums of the disks, are the disk drums supposed to be coated in special paint at manufacture to prevent this?

Any advice would help. I am thinking of taking it back to the show room as four weeks seems too soon, I understand that they can turn rusty and due to the weather etc. I have noticed as well that the brakes make a binding noise when I apply the brakes.

Should I return the car and demand new pads and invest? Is it covered by warranty as it's not normal wear and tear.

Look at the pictures taken at four weeks from new.

The dealership are unlikely to take you on. The rust is normal even after this short time, especially this time of year. And on top of that, you don't know how long your car might have been sitting around outside before you got it.

The "binding noise," depending on the mileage you've done, should go away as you bed in the brakes more. However if you've done a few thousand miles already, it might be worth checking if any of your wheels are binding, ie; jacking up a corner and spinning the wheel with your hand. If any of them are stiff to turn then you can go back to the dealer and ask them to look at it. Either that or test it by driving the car forward at low speed for a short distance then just let it roll to a stop. If there is a binding brake, it will probably stop nearly immediately, if not it should roll to a nice gradual stop.

Hope this helps you.

As above this is normal, mine have the same marks. I must say though they rust more than other diskes i have had in the past. There also noisy disk pad combination.

Mine have already a ridge on the edge of the disk where the ware indicator is, this dosent bode well and i have only done 12k, i suspect it will need new disks by 20k at this rate.

I sprayed mine with some high temp silver spray but have noticed the disks rust up very quickly 2 pics i took the other morning showing how the disks had started rusting overnight.

Thanks guys for your advice.

I think I am going to spray the drums. It looks terrible as it is.

Black Hammerite works too, did that on my wife's VW Up! rear hubs before I sold it.

I've got the same rust on my hubs on the rear, fronts are fine.

Agreed on the spraying plan, I'm going to do mine when the weather gets better as it does look rubbish

Mike 97: That's nothing, mine turn completely orange/brown overnight.

Mine too.  I don't see you can stop it.  After all, they are bare steel out in the rain.  The only thing that worries me about it is that the first few brake applications until the rust has worn off, means the pads wear more than they do when pressed against a clean disk.

Discs are not steel.

If they are not steel, what are they?

heres what i did with mine the hubs are still looking good the edge of the discs rust up really easy!

Cast iron. It has better thermal properties.

I feel I'm going to have to eat some humble pie very soon.  :emoticon-0101-sadsmile:

They are but they may add other 'erbs and spices to the mix.

ahenners above mentioned that his rear hubs were rusty and fronts were not, I've noticed this before on previous cars and this made me think that that the make up of the fronts could be slightly different to the rears but it could just be coincidence.

I always Hammerite mine in black.

I wouldn't say the picture at the start of the post is that bad.

Having said that, distance from the coast makes a massive difference - even if car is garaged, salt air is brutal and gets into everything.

No harm done :)

Discs rust, they're high carbon steel.

If they made them from stainless, they wouldn't work as well.

Same issue  All 4 hubs too. Seemed to happen within a couple of days of my Skoda dealership jet washing the car after some warranty work (as well as the wheel bolt caps being coated in a white dried soap scum)

Wow! Makes my wheels look horrendous!! (Even though I've cleaned them since!) :D Time to invest some money methinks...

pretty cheap actually, £250 for four discs and pads, you can go cheaper if you just want stock smooth and coated.
