Strange ticking/clicking noise

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I have done a lot of searching in various areas of the interwebs but not really found anything conclusive. I realise these things are hard to diagnose but thought I would give it a shot on here and let you knowledgeable lot have a think before I spend a heap of cash on investigative work (if I even need to).

I am going to get this in first - my engine is fairly tappety already and has been for some time - I am not particularly worried about this, hasn't got any worse in 30k miles. This noise I am about describe is a new noise that sounds different to the tappet noise (which very obviously comes from the innards of the engine).

The noise sounds like a clicking/tapping noise or to be more specific like there is potentially a small stone/object in my disc. I hear you say that's probably what it is and it is indeed what i suspected at first, however the noise is there at idle when the car is stationary. The noise has a slight pattern to it (Not just a tick-tick-tick-tick), it's more like a ticky-tick-tick-tickty-tick-tick (sorry haha).

I can hear it inside the car and outside the car. Sometimes it is there from first start up, sometimes it appears after a bit of driving. When I pop the bonnet you cannot hear it as the noise of the engine is louder. It appears to be coming from the OSF part of the engine bay, possibly behind the OSF wheel/cambelt area. I cannot see anything untoward when I have had an look (cambelt cover looks fine, everything looks in place as it should). Cambelt was done 9k ago so doubt it's that.

Car has done 131k miles, 1.9tdi 100hp.

Has anyone come across anything like this before at all? It basically sounds like something is loose.

Thanks in advance,

Mike.

I had a similar situation and finally solved it.

Have a good read through the attachments and if you do attempt to reset the tappet adjusters, you need to replace the 'ball studs' + 'cupped adjusters' + '6 bolts' - It's the ball studs and cupped adjusters that wear thus creating the clicking noise, more noticeable when the engine is cold.

I forgot to say one vital bit of info, the time between the ticks/frequency if them does increase with speed and decrease with speed. Its just sometimes the noise is there on idle when the car is not moving.
