VT and new car order

What do you mean by slot? Not an actual day but a range of days they may collect on?

An actual day.  In my case they said the inspection guy would call on the day to give me an approximate time of arrival.

But unless you're having the car inspected at your place of employment, it's a day off work because you don't know until the day when he's going to turn up.

  • No that's my point re mileage on a PCP agreement - the VT clause will overrule that of the mileage, so if your were to exercise your right to VT after you had paid 50% of the total payable, the mileag

Another quick question. My 1st MOT will be due in June. If they collect the car in May obviously I have no problem and don't get it done, but if the car is delayed then I guess I will have to book in it. Problem is I will obviously have to book it in May to ensure it is done in time. I suppose I might as well have it done anyway to cover all eventualities.

That's not entirely true, I missed a call from on my mobile from BCA on Friday but they left a message. Called them back yesterday a bit confused as the message referred to a completely different car registration number to mine (SF14 WPR whose ever car that is!) but after about ten minutes on the phone eventually managed to convince them that they were meant to be collecting my car and was offered a choice of collection dates on Feb 28th, March 1st or 2nd. In the end had to go with March 2nd as I'll need to check and clean the car on Feb 28th and the collection slots that they offer have to be from 8.30am onwards and I won't have the car at the dealership until about 11.30/ 12 that day, so had to extend my insurance to cover the car for that overlap period.

I did notice one thing though and that was the dealership I'm getting the new car from are offering for sale a car very similar to my current car, except that it is 2014 and not 2013 and 2 litre diesel as opposed to 1.6 diesel, same mileage, same spec, body shape but they want £13,500 for that car, which is maybe a bit optimistic. I put my car number into one of these car buying websites a few weeks ago to see how low a price they would actually offer on it, offers from so called interested dealers were between £8500 and £8800, kind of makes you laugh really as if I could possibly accept offers like that when Skoda Finance would want almost £9700 from me right now if I were actually paying the finance off!

Whatever happens to that car at the auction, it is fairly likely given its age, mileage and spec that it turns up on another dealers forecourt at another "optimistic" asking price.

Thats why I'd never buy a used Octavia, the prices are ridiculous compared to the discounted new prices, and compared to the WBAC offers and the final values.

I guess they are trying to hold the used values up a bit.

Seems like the place to buy a used Octavia would be at auction.

Not sure if it's already been mentioned here or not, but Skoda at VWFS are now calculating excess mileage on a pro-rata basis. So if you VT your car at say 40 months on a 6000 miles per year deal (500 miles per month), if you're over 20000 in this example, you pay per mile for the excess.

I think in the past you could go massively over mileage and VTing was a way of escaping these charges, no longer it seems.

Sorry. It that's not true. It's against the law to include excess mileage in a VT. I only phoned up a few days ago and was given a figure. No mention of mileage whatsoever. Where did you get this info from?

See this forum for lots of useful info. Hopefully I am allowed to post this. They can ask but you do not pay it.

Where do you get your info that it's against the law?
My reading of it as a lay person is that it's unclear whether it would or wouldn't apply, but I've found this where the financial ombudsman service decided that mileage charges could still be applied.

That's for a hire purchase agreement not a Pcp.

Probably cause it was a little known rule so it wasn't worth them arguing the toss for a handful of cars a year, but now every car forum has experts advising people that they should VT cars left right and centre it represents a bigger problem.

See forum I have linked too. All info you need there.

Yep, and they both rely on the consumer credit act of 1974

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1974/39/section/99 and the next section are the relevant ones I believe.
I don't see any difference in how that applies to a PCP or HP agreement as they are both loans regulated by the same act - it's just the payment profile through the term is different.

I still want to know where Dodgy has got this info from?

I'd take the opinion of the ombudsman who rule on cases like this over an internet forum.

There is no excess mileage charge on a hire purchase agreement anyway. Mileage doesn't come into it.

Is still doesn't alter the fact I was told a figure to finish my agreement early and was told that would be all.

I got the information on the phone today from VWFS, I called 0370 333 4449 and the lady talked me through the VT process and at the end explained mileage would be assessed pro-rata over the months I've had the car. Interestingly, I have a payment due tomorrow, she said that is technically an over-payment and I would get that refunded back! Even though I have the use of the car until they pick it up in about 3 weeks or so!

Edit to add, by my calculations I'm about 500 miles over. They charge 6p + VAT per mile, and if I stop using the car between now and them picking it up, I'll likely be pro-rata below mileage anyway.

Neither do I, I can only imagine it's a change and I'm one of the first to fall to it? Like I said, doesn't really bother me, I was 38 months into a 42 month PCP and my mileage of 6000 per year that I selected at the start of the deal has been about right for me.

In my contract it states: I will be entitled to return the goods and pay half the amount under this agreement. If I have paid at least half and any overdue payments and have taken reasonable care of the goods I will not have to pay any more.

Just called VW up again and they have confirmed that all I will pay is the monthly sum to bring my payments to the 50% mark. I asked if that is definately all I need to pay and they confirmed yes.

VT'ed my Polo a couple of weeks ago with VAG Finance. The dealer who I'm buying my Octavia off is happy to store the Polo until BCA can collect it. Had a call from BCA today stating they can collect on the 7th of March. They are happy to collect from said dealer. BCA stated the car must be insured when they collect it. My policy runs out on the 9th March! Phew!

That's what I want to do. When do you pick your Octy up? I need to time it right so I don't end up without a car. I was planning on vting it once I know it's in the country but may be a bit late then.

I am picking up my Octavia on 28th February as it is a pre reg. First of all you need to find out if you can VT your car with little or no cost? I did mine over the phone with VAG Finance. Cost me £9.05 to settle up! Have had two traumatic years with my Polo due to multiple warrranty issues.

They then arrange BCA to collect your car. But bear in mind, I am buying a car off a forecourt. I didn't initiate VT until I found a car I definitely wanted, but I was aware I could give it up in February, having spoken to VAG FS in the autumn. Obviously buying a new one will take a bit more planning. Incidentally to settle up my PCP and trade my Polo in against the Octavia would have cost me over a grand!

I am buying the Octavia on a personal loan from my bank. Old school car buying. Okay I will probably lose a ton of money on depreciation but I plan to keep the car a long time and it will be mine after 3 years and plan to keep for at least 6.

Cheers for the reply. Already provisionally sorted my vt out so know what I need to pay to get out if it. Won't be doing it until April. Ordered new car due April/May (build week 11).
