Tyre scrubbing

Featured Replies

Quite recently had my car lowered 15mm. Problem is that it now seems to be scrubbing the inside of my frt tyres even though i have had alignment done twice now. Any ideas?

Has to be either camber or toe in/out is wrong.

How has the alignment been done? If you are still having issues I would look for the nearest place with a Hunter 4 wheel machine as those places tend to know how to use them.

Those places also tend to check the car before just blindly checking alignment. Something may not have gone back right or tight and may not be causing issue until you are on the move. May not show up under normal alignment checks

A good look at what was taken apart during the lowering would be one of my first ports of call.

What size of wheels are you running?

What about the rims? With and offset? A lower offset will bring the wheels further out and may prevent scrubbing on the inside.

Should not happen. I lowered 30 mm and run 19" 8,5J rims ET47 with 235/35R19 tyres and have no problem at all.

I also know an O3 driver with the same wheel setup that had 40 mm lowering and 10 mm spacers on either side on the back axle.

you either have a different issue non related to the wheels or you have an ET under 40 or over 50.

I have ran the car with 19" extremes through the summer but i have put the standard 18" with goodyear ultragrip for the winter, about the same time as it was lowered with vw racing springs. I have taken it to 2 different guys with 4 wheel alignment trying to get it right. No issues before the height drop. Has anyone got the proper figures for the car with lowered suspension?

So the wheels are 18" 7,5J ET45 with 225x45R18? Which standard wheels are you talkiing about? How much did you drop the suspension? Still doesn't sound like it's about your wheel setup.

Not sure of the name of the wheel. The ones it comes standard with mk3 vrs with the sizes above. No i would say it not a wheel problem either. I'm wondering if the garage has upset something suspension wise when he fitted the springs. I wonder if he took the driveshaft off or forced everything down to get clearance to remove the strut

Drop with vw racing springs are ment to be a subtle 10mm but i would say it's  more like something between 15-20 mm

That doesn't sound right. I don't know the name either, but am familiar with the wheel you ment, should be no problem. I do know a lot can go wrong if the lowering isn't done right. I even know of height snesors for the Xenon adjustment being fitted wrong, so the owner knocked them off from under the car at the first ride he did.

Is everything mounted right? Didn't leave a stabiliser unfitted or something like that? How is the feel of the ride?

Car feels fine no drop links left undone etc. Yeah i know what you mean about lights had to get them reset as they were sitting high after lowering. Loads of things going through my head like are stut mounts fitted correctly, bushes have they damaged the driveshaft. Not sure how all the different things would effect tyre scrub but need to get it sorted sooner rather than later

Thought the MK3 Vrs came with 225/40/18, not 225/45 18, Could that be the problem ?

Sorry yeah stand corrected. 225/40/18. Don't think this would effect tyre scrub though

you're right. My mistake. Obviously 19" wouldn't be 35 if 18" would be 45.

The correct tyre size for a MKIII Vrs :-

225/45X17

225/40X18

225/35X19

On a 7,5J rim. I have 8,5J with Conti Sportcontact tyres, that needs 235..... In winter Conti Wintercontact also 235
