AFS Motorway mode

Featured Replies

Does anyone know what speed motorway mode engages on the Xenon headlight AFS system? Some sites say 80kph others 110kph.

it's not 80, that I can tell you. I understand it to be 120km/h, which matches with my experience so far (as in, I haven't seen this yet, I'm limited to 100 and anything close has not been clear enough to see any difference, it's just a decent light output) and was confirmed in other threads.

The statement I find is that "the light moves towards the Autobahn setup as of 90km/h and stays there as of 120".

Why?

Sorry 80 should have been 90. 120kph seems a bit high as that's 75mph which was is 5mph over the legal limit in the U.K.

Why, because like you I have seen no difference in the light output.

is it possible to lower the speed it acticivates at using vcds

Which adaptation, do you have some more details? :)

i am asking the question mate i should have put

is it possible to lower the speed it activates at using vcds  ?

I haven't noticed much difference either, and been even actively trying to seen it - wonder if it is working/activated

Not that I'm aware of and if you could then it wouldn't be highway mode ;)

The idea is fast roads (110kph+) are relatively straight and flat with cars being more spaced apart so having the headlights aim upwards slightly shouldn't cause glare to other drivers.

Slower roads on the other hand, will probably have corners, crests, dips and cars closer together which means that glare is much more likely if the headlights aimed upwards. Therefore the highway function won't activate as it's unsafe...

The amount that it raises isn't massive so you're unlikely to notice it much, the best way to confirm it's working is to use VCDS to monitor the headlight aim.

Can't say I've noticed any change in beam pattern on my S3

hi langers

yep i understand the theory and i think the difference is noticeable as the reach is further. HBA deals with dipping remarkably well if somewhat conservatively at times. i was thinking that lowering the activation speed to to 55mph (ish) , would be pretty much ideal as up here in north yorkshire we do have some good fast "A" roads, like stretches of the A47 in your neck of the woods

Highway mode definitely works on mine but I can't tell the exact activation speed for sure. I think it's above 120 kph.

Speed limit is 130 kph here on highway and you are 'safe' under 150. ;)

IMO the system aims the beam a bit too high...sometimes I get flashed after overtaking.

I see this problem in my mirrors when an O3 follows me with xenons.

This problem also exist on Audi A4 for example.

My bad, misread it. Got my hopes up too soon... :)

a very detailed information source in German - via skodacommunity.de - implies it's only changeable via VCP (not VCDS!) and the lowest setting is 100km/h.

100 kph is 62mph that would be a better setting.

But in the UK that will result with the headlights raising upwards on single carriageway roads and dazzling oncoming traffic, 110 kph would work better as its closer to 70MPH.

The rest of EU land has a speed limit of at least 120 kmh, its only us here in the UK stuck the slower 70MPH so I guess thats why 120 kmh is chosen.

That's true.
