Bolero upgrade - best setup?

Featured Replies

It seems that the columbus is the way to go when upgrading from a bolero however, my Mk II VRS came with a Parrot CK100 bluetooth kit already installed. I don't know what options I have with an already installed kit that allows me to make phone calls. I'd like an inbuilt sat nav as that would be a nice addition but would I have to do away with the parrot kit entirely?

I know about having to get a new facia but don't have a clue when it comes to coding ect or what extra bits I'd need, if any. I'm assuming it would be a direct plug n play swap?

What options do I have in keeping with the bluetooth kit or getting rid of it? Doing a search just bombards you with all sorts of different projects and tbh, find it a little intimidating. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The Columbus (RNS510) and Amundsen (RNS310) do not have bluetooth so you can continue using the parrot.

The Amundsen+ (RNS315) comes with and without bluetooth. If it has bluetooth, you can code it out and use the parrot.

Any new headunit should be coded to suit your car as it's unlikely to come with the correct coding.

If you do want OEM bluetooth, you can remove the parrot and if needed add an appropriate bluetooth module but it'll add expense.

Ideally yes, I would rather keep the parrot kit as it's a nice addition and would be as shame to get rid in all honesty. It's actually rather good. Ok, that being said, where do I shop for such a head unit? Do I use a certain auction site and try grab myself a bargain or is there a direct place I can shop? What would I be expected to pay?

I'm assuming I have to be careful to ensure it's a legit one with the correct Part No?

Which is the better of the two. The Amundsen + or the Columbus?

I'm really Sorry lots of questions I know but I'm as green as the grass when it comes to stuff like this and I don't want to get it wrong.

The Columbus has a bigger screen and is a more popular unit. Unless you find a bargain Amundsen/Amundsen+ I would go for the Columbus.

It might be worth dropping Rustynuts a PM: https://www.briskoda.net/forums/profile/53783-rustynuts/

He normally has a few in stock and has supplied a good number of people on the forum now, always been very helpful and friendly when I've spoken to him!

I looked into this and I am opting for a Kenwood DDX5016 DAB. It.does all the things I need such as Bluetooth calling, Ipod connectivity and has DAB. It can be had for £250 in places and won best headunit. I looked into the Kenwood made for the vag range. Apart from on screen images when you push buttons or adjust the temp. The 5016 does exactly the same job but at a 1/4 of the price. Plus they sound good too and you can install a reversing camera if you want to with the Kenwood.

Kenwood DDX5016 DAB

Hi.

Sorry to sound such a newbie but can the Kenwood DDX5016 DAB be fitted in a 2007 Octavia VRS estate? And if so is it fairly easy to do?

PS I'm pretty rubbish at technical matters !!

Looking at the specs it can be fitted into any vehicle with a double din head unit. You would need a facia plate and fitting kit, which are about £30.

I am preferring this option as the skoda headunits on ebay are very overpriced for second hand. No second hand headunit should be 400 or so pounds to buy. I can get everything I need including dab with no coding needed for about £300 all in with the kenwood and have a guarantee on the headunit if it ever went faulty.

And what's the connectivity with the MFSW and Maxidotlikewith that unit cos the price does sound tempting?

Unfortunately for that connectivity you need to buy the Kenwood made for VAG. My car hasnt a mfsw or the maxidot highline so for me compatibility isnt an issue. In fairness even with cars I had mfsw, I still used the buttons on the radio lol

Personally I think the adaptor facias for square headunits are ugly in the Octavia so instead I'd try and VAG specific fitment such as the DNX525DAB or DNX516DABS.

They are expensive new but second hand bargains can be had, it'll need a facia designed for a Columbus/Amundsen but it'll look much better.

It's all down to what functionally you want, how much integration with the car and what money you can justify spending :)

Thanks for the reply Matt. That 5016 unit looks the best and most affordable option going. Do they take much fitting? I'm rubbish with technical things !!

Notice you are in Nottingham too. Whereabouts?

I live in Newark.

They dont look that difficult to fit but given my time constraints with work. I will have to get it fitted by a company in Nottingham.
