Steering wheel slightly off centre

Featured Replies

This has been bugging me since I took delivery on Jan 9th (brand new car), the steering wheel is ever so slightly off centre, if I hold it dead centre the car runs slightly wide to the right even on completely flat roads (before anyone says it's to do with camber of the road etc)

It's been in to a main dealer for a 4 wheel alignment check and they told me the camber setting was slightly off at the NSF so they adjusted it. It is marginally better but still not quite perfect.

Am I expecting too much, I am a bit OCD about this and like the wheel to sit level when I'm driving in a straight line! The car was nigh on £30k and it feels like something that should be right.

Had similar problem after they changed my engine.

After 3 times and some borderline argument, I convinced them to check subframe alignment and... It was off by 1cm :)

I had this on mine since new, only just off, dealer said it was within their tolerances so 'couldn't do anything'! When I swapped for winter wheels at the local garage, they sorted it for me no bother, guy said he's also OCD so got it perfect for me!

I had this on my car too. The dealer fixed it for free when I was in to get something else looked at, no questions asked.

My old car had also steering wheel slightly off centre and I had it adjusted with me sitting on the driver's seat.

As I usually drive alone, it made a difference.

Had same problem took the car to wheels alignment. And problem is gone. :)

Mechanic told me Skoda on new cars aligns front wheels little bit towards in side to cancel any chance of puling to either side on road. (A) So he centered them. (H) Problem was gone.

I think my steering wheel is slightly out as well onmy 230. It's hardly noticable but it's there.

I've done a search but I cannot find what I'm after.

Can anyone tell me the correct alignment settings for an Octavia MKIII Tsi Vrs ( 66 plate ). I would be grateful if it could be scanned into a thread so I can print it off

Thanks in Advance

If the car runs a straight line without any steering input from the driver, then I would assume the steering wheel hadn't been centred correctly before the alignment was adjusted.

On a straight road, holding the steering wheel gently the car drifts slightly to the right when the  steering wheel is at the 12 o clock position.

If the steering wheel is slightly off centre the car runs straight so maybe it's the steering wheel and not the alignment

Do you know if the steering wheel is positioned correctly will it affect the Lane assist camera ?

* If this is without you holding it then I would say it is simply that the steering wheel is not centred correctly.

This would mean the garage having to adjust some settings. Toe I think.

Mine was off centre and sorted with readjustment, but I was paying for it.

On new(& ish) cars they may have a 'can't be bothered attitude' as they will not get paid for it......Just a thought.

I cannot see it affecting the Lane Assist camera. I would guess(?) logically this is fixed (non adjusting) on the car.

Thanks Tilt, I have also noticed the Sharkfin on the roof is not dead centre either, it points to the left ever so slightly. I was thinking it may be connected to the steering wheel in some way, adjust the sharkfin and it may also sort out the steering wheel or Visa Versa.

Thanks for the replies, I will get it back in and ask for it to be sorted, minor but not right.

As for the shark fin, that's just bolted to the roof, might have been knocked when washing the car.

Need to get this done myself.

Have the car in for a service and have another mkiii as a courtesy car with the same issue. It's alignment is fine but the steering wheel is only ever so slightly to the left to stay straight otherwise if I put it at 12 o'clock the car goes to the right.

Hope the mechanic will let me centre the wheel.

I've had this happen with the majority of cars I've owned. My last two (Both Vauxhall Insignias) would require the wheel to be slightly off centre to the left especially when driving at high speeds to remain straight. I just put it down to wear and tear as well as engine torque causing the car to veer slightly to one side. It was never serious enough to warrant any further adjustment as the tracking was reported as OK in all the services both cars had.
