Kumho WP71 winter tyres - WARNING - check now!

Featured Replies

Guys,

Fitted 4 of these to a colleague's Golf GTE on 1st December. Changed back to summers today as he wasn't happy with grip, and had a few moments; went to tyre centre to collect the car and they had discovered all four have badly cracked sidewalls :blink:

He's done 13,000 miles since they were fitted (yes, that's over 1k miles a week) but they still have 6mm left as measured by the tyre place, so at least they wear well!

The pressures have been a consistent 35psi so not under-inflated, TPMS has not given any warnings etc.

Just a head's up - it's hard to see cracks when fully inflated, so it wasn't obvious when checking visually.

Tyre place are filing a claim with the suppliers, so expecting a full refund.

Worrying...

I've got the same on my car at the moment Andy.  I've checked the tyres over for cracks and they are fine but wondered how you have found the Kumhos?  We had a bit of snow over here in Scarborough and they were great. They managed to easily get me up a steep incline whilst a few 4x4 vehicles simply sat and span all four wheels (I'm assuming that they were on summer tyres).  They were also really good in temperatures below two degrees celsius and inspired confidence.

I did find though, in temperatures over five or 6 degrees that they were a bit scary at times, especially if the roads were damp rather than wet.  I've had to temper my enthusiasm somewhat compared to the Rainsports I normally run.

Echoes my experience of winter tyres in general over the last 7 years of using them on my Octavias and Ford Ranger pickup. Not too bad when the roads are properly wet, dodgy when roads are damp, salty and grimy. Ranger is rear wheel drive by default so can be fun... :p

Checked mine today, all seems ok. not run them on snow but they are excellent in the wet.

Cold, damp roads not so good. I can get the traction light on at XX + mph.. Not good, power down carefully.

Summers back on next week I think......

I have bought Khumo's before, not the winter version but had the same experience of wall cracks after just a few thousand miles.

Wont use them again, which is a shame as I rated them for a cheap-ish tyre.

Wow.

I had Kumho summer tyres on my wife's VW Up! from new, never had any issues over 4 years, and like you, I thought they were pretty good for the money.

That crack went 3/4's around the tyre :o and was after no more 6k miles. I took all four off :(

Standard behaviour of winters in my experience (had Nankang SV-2s, Vredstein Snowtrac 3s and now Nokian A3s). Crossclimates on my partners civic however are much better in those situations.

I had a set of these on my Octavia estate; they were like this on the sidewall and in between the tread. They opened up quite deep when pulled apart. I ended up replacing them at ~3.5mm and 9mths. Had done ~9000miles
