  • It'll eventually go quiet, right after after making a loud BANG!    Sorry, I'm not really helping am I....

No-one changes a single mass flywheel for a dual mass one, do they?

  • Just a mad thought - he did put oil in it didn't he?

Thanks everyone. Would it be worth looking for a Recon'd non-JXY 02R box that'll fit my new clutch/dmf, as well?

Sorry for the double post, but I've had a little bit of a result with the breakers I bought the new gearbox from. After a lot of correspondence between us, they have offered to take my original gearbox away and recon it for free! Sadly, I'll have to pay my mate another wad of cash to refit it, but still a step forward :)

Make sure it is done by a reputable company, if its currently not working properly how do you know they will actually get it refurbed properly as no doubt it would cost them more than its worth.

Just warning you before you try for another attempt from them, they obviously didn't know what they were selling the 1st time so can they be trusted?

Nope, they can't, it doesn't add up, you can't recondition a gearbox for less than the secondhand value. My guess is they're going to muck about until your warranty has timed out. Just get a refund and be done with them.

My warranty has already timed out! I know, I'm as cynical as you. I'm screwed either way, so I'll just have to hope. If it goes belly up, I'd have to find another box anyway......

Well, would you believe it! My old gearbox is winging itself back to me with new bearings and synchros and a few makeover? Nah, I don't as well! Fingers crossed it's all OK.......

That's because they're all big-powah VRS modders, OP is fettling a bog-stock PD100 and doesn't need to worry about torque. A PD100 SMF would be a massive downgrade on a VRS, it's a cast iron dustbin lid.

Sorry to quote an old post, but I fear the new clutch setup isn't strong enough for all the 'powah' my little estate produces!

Over the last few days, I have thought that the car has been a little down on power. It's a hard thing to assess though, as I just can't rattle through the gears at the moment, due to only one of them working right!

Anyway, I was in 3rd gear today, trying to overtake a car in another lane. I was completely off the clutch, but when I put my feet down, the revs shot up, but the car didn't even move.

Now, is this down to the clutch being weak, or is it something to do with 2nd box? #openswallet

Dude, I thought you'd had a new clutch and flywheel fitted?

Yes Sep, I did have a new clutch and flywheel fitted. If you remember, I went for the DMF (replacing the SMF) it's stuck in my mind that Darkside kept telling me that the kit I bought couldn't handle the 'powah' that my car puts out, even though everyone else though it could. It can't be toast in two thousand miles......please tell me it's the duff gearbox :-(

I can only think the terrible gearbox oil seal has failed and contaminated the clutch causing it to slip.

It would be almost impossible for the gearbox to 'slip' without catastrophic failure of synchro rings and if that occured you would certainly hear it as it was slipping. Think when you crunch a gear type noise.

I would suggest the same as @sepulchrave the gearbox seal possibly or the crank main seal. You would expect to see some oil leaking around the bellhousing area I would have thought if it was leaking enough to cause that.

Only other suggestion is the 'wrong' clutch has been fitted.

Can you try just gently resting on the clutch pedal under moderate acceleration and see if it starts to slip. Ideally you would be able to apply light pressure without slippage on a decent clutch

Thanks again fellas. Sorry for the melodramatic reply earlier. You know me - a glass half full kinda chap! I love the car to bits, but it's fighting me every step of the way!

The slipping is only occurring on 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. 3rd and 4th are the ones that 'jump'  out of gear if you're not gentle.

How much pressure would you have to apply to check the clutch when moving? And if the oil seal has gone, will I need a whole new clutch?

Just the friction plate.

You could try driving at say 60mph in 5th, push the clutch down fully and go for full throttle (redline) then quickly release the clutch and the revs should drop straight away especially on a good clutch. Obviously don't keep trying this as you risk burning out the clutch but once is not going to hurt.

You could maybe ring them and im sure they would be able to provide just the friction plate. Its just most people change the lot hence why you rarely see just the individual components.

I wouldn't go making any purchases yet tho unless they can be returned as you don't know the extent of what has happened with your current clutch.

Makes sense, C. I'll get my mechanic to assess it on Tuesday.

Well, would you believe it. My mechanic has assessed the pressure plate and noticed a small amount of oil on the plate due to the other gearbox having a small leak which contaminated the clutch plate. He's cleaned it with brake cleaner and told me to leave it a couple days........it's still slipping though. And the new recon'd gearbox is much better.......apart from an awful whine that's only in 3rd gear under acceleration. Input bearing?  I've bought a total lemon, haven't I? I just give up.

Looks like the recon gearbox is still not right then. Wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't last much longer they can't have done a brilliant job. I would say the car is not the lemon but the gearbox you chose was

Depends how bad the contamination was if its been slipping a lot it might have got lots of heat into it which would probably worsen the effects of contamination, but yeah see how it goes don't boot it  off the line straight away be a bit gentle for the first 1000 miles or so as you would with a new clutch anyway.

So he took the gearbox back off to inspect the clutch and just cleaned it and put it back?

This all sounds really fishy to me. The clutch should have been examined before they fitted the 'reconditioned' box. If there was oil on it it should never have been refitted. Honestly, they sound ludicrously incompetent - or they are just filling you with bullshit.

Don't mean to upset you but that stuff won't stop it whining.

  • Author

I know, TMB. It was in jest. Could the whining lessen over time?

Never known a whining gearbox to improve with time, no.
