Loud crunching noise between 1st and 2nd gear?

The gearbox in my black vRS had a full rebuild 20k miles ago. The receipt is for £1300. Don't know if that's the going rate or my mate was ripped off though .....

... Woah. I'd want a limited slip diff bought and fitted for that price as well as the rebuild! Haha

No-one changes a single mass flywheel for a dual mass one, do they?

  • Just a mad thought - he did put oil in it didn't he?

The 5 speed ones I was looking at were £500-600 delivered for a complete reconditioned gearbox.

I'm guessing you could knock off £70-100 if you send yours for recon.

It will be more for a 5 speed diesel box as they are made from stronger stuff to cope with the torque, not to mention they are probably less common to find

Look on ebay for your GB code and see what comes up as low mileage and with a 3 month warranty. That way you've only lost the labour cost if the replacement gearbox is no good.

Yours will be the JDA code looking at this link, but anything with the gearbox type 02R should fit, just check the ratios to make sure they aren't too different.

Yeah, a lot more than I was expecting too! Will check the receipt and not just the cost when I get home from sunning myself.

I doubt it makes a difference, but it was a long ratio 'box and remember my mate saying everything was replaced?! (Hope it retained the long ratio final gears!)

I had the same problem on mine (rough from 1st into 2nd).

A specialist in Crawley offered to strip it down to see if it was worth repairing (for a few pints).

He stripped it right down and found it looked pretty well OK so suggested a rebuild with new synchro ring(s) for 2nd gear.

The whole job was £250 including all parts VAT etc. It is perfect.

Before that I found that the 'on-line' breakers had no idea which box would fit mine, they sent wrong shapes, wrong gear ratios etc.

Waste of time unless they match your gearbox code, and you still can't be sure of the history.

I thought £250 for a professional rebuild was very good value.

Happy to supply details of the guy if you are interested.

That is a stupendous price for what amounts to a recon. box, I assume the labour to remove and refit it is in addition to that cost?

Post the details here please, I'm in Sussex and would appreciate them for future gearbox jobs.

That was 'just' the diagnosis, parts and rebuild. I removed the box and replaced it myself. Not a massive job just a methodical sequence.

The company is P&R Gearboxes in Copthorne.

Their no is 01293 888141

Mob 07966 429290

Can't rate them highly enough.

Thank you, that's a keeper.

Sorry to revive this thread from the virtual netherworld, but my gearbox is getting worse and I wonder if it's even worth putting the Red Line MTL I've bought. As it's been a bit hotter today, I've had problems getting into 1st, 2nd, 4th and reverse! The box is fine from cold, though. The change from 1st to 2nd is very snatchy as well, when hot.

I have been quoted £1180 for a recon and refit from one 'specialist' are there any decent gearbox pros in and around the Cambridgeshire area?

Many thanks

You already know the answer to your question, of course it isn't worth it. Have you actually checked the gearbox oil level? It sounds like it's too late for that 'box anyway now. Just chuck a guaranteed low mileage secondhand 'box at it, quicker and cheaper.

Probably worth bleeding the clutch because it's free and easy. You might score lucky and that be the answer.

As above, second hand low mileage gearbox will be your best bet. I bought mine from a 70,000 mile car for £80, cost another £150 for new clutch and all the replacement bolts and about 6-7 hours work on the driveway.

Obviously if you are getting a garage to do the labour with a ramp and air tools I would expect 4-5 hours including a clutch change so would estimate around £3-400 labour at most.

Yes your taking a risk on a used gearbox, but I'd much rather have a low mileage good condition gearbox than a potentially very high mileage, worn out reconditioned one, as it may never be 'perfect' again no matter how many parts have been replaced.

At the end of the day its a 10 year old skoda not a racecar so finding a 'gearbox pro' to sort you out is probably a bit ott.

There will be many ebay breakers selling second hand gearboxes with 3 month warranties that will post them to you so you shouldn't struggle to find a gearbox

If you have changed the oil, re-aligned the gear cables and bled the brakes and clutch and it still crunches then the box is probably knackered!

I had a Seat Cordoba that crunched. We tried all of the above as well as having the shift lever that sits ontop of the box repaired (was a bit wobbly) but in the end it carried on crunching and eventually went bang. The bearings inside had failed which is quite a common failure on these boxes.

What's the best DMF/clutch kit to buy for the 1.9 PD setup? AXR engine and JXY gearbox. Some kind soul on here said about the Sachs kit that Darkside sell, but their sales team told me they're 'weak' and to buy a single mass kit!

Yours is already single mass as standard since it's a PD100.

  • Author

Really? That's interesting. I thought all of the 1.9s ran DMFs. Should I buy the same again, Sep? What would you run? I just want it to last!

Don't we all, but nothing ever does...

Just buy new standard Sachs kit since you don't need a flywheel, should last another 100k even remapped.

Thanks, Sep. I just have a fear that the blooming flywheel will detonate on me, just as everything is put back together! For future reference, I would need to go for the Darkside single mass kit? Is there any difference in noise/comfort in a single mass kit to DMF?

The only difference between the SMF and DMF on any given engine is that an SMF is a bigger heavier lump of steel and acts as a simple mass damper for vibration, the DMF is a combination of a mass damper and a harmonic damper and is therefore smaller and lighter, this makes for a small performance, economy and emissions gain but it is more expensive which is why only the VRS got it.

Put simply a DMF makes a diesel engine feel snappier and revvier, like a petrol engine, but they're not as robust and reliable as a SMF.

What Darkside sell are lightened SMF conversions which is why they rattle and vibrate, because they're too light for the engine.

  • Author

So should I just get the clutch/dmf kit that Darkside list for my car, then? (I've though they said it's 'weak'?! Are there any other kits for the PD 100 for a good price? (I'm buying the 'full set' as I got some money for Father's Day!)

What kit would you buy, Sep? Darkside or otherwise?

Edited by GeneralDogsbody

If you fit the Darkside lighter SMF kit the engine will rattle and shake, you don't really need a heavy duty clutch since you're not making the torque out of a PD100, the PD130 DMF setup is probably not compatible with your bellhousing and slave.

I don't know but you might be able to get an uprated Sachs SRE type organic clutch and stronger diaphragm to suit your flywheel, you'd need to ask, Darkside would know.

  • Author

Cheers matey. Why would Darkside say that's a weak setup? I'm not running mega power! I've probably got only 70bhp left of my 100, all told! My engine code is AXR, so it'll fit?....

It says it will, GFI...
