No-one changes a single mass flywheel for a dual mass one, do they?

  • Just a mad thought - he did put oil in it didn't he?

It's your favorite procrastinator again. I phoned Darkside to check stock of the £225 DMF kit, which they do indeed have in stock, and it does fit my car etc. I spanner was thrown in the works however, when the most-helpful sales chappy suggested that I keep my stock SMF (In his words, as there's nothing that normally goes wrong with them) and just buy a new clutch kit instead, which he believed would be more robust than the DMF set up. Whatdya reckon?

And the bolt kit he said I'd need.....Not sure what for?

Should I just buy the £225 kit, and be done with it? (I really wish I knew more about these things!) Thanks ;)

I did say that to you originally when I dropped the bombshell that you already have an SMF. I said "Just buy a decent clutch kit".

I would, the DMF is lighter so the engine spins up quicker and it's much smoother so no diesel shake. An SMF is scrapyard engineering, a DMF, precision engineering.

But you don't do diesel.

Pretty much all petrols have 'em these days as well, SMF's are just so Noughties.

I don't do 'these days' cars. :)

Me either, if I were going to drop big money on a car it'd be a classic from the 60's or 70's with wind-up windys. Pigs who waste £20k on a new wheelbarrow are muppets.

Cheers, Sep and the gang (Sounds like an 80s revival night!) So DMF it is. What's the average lifespan of a DMF against a SMF?  The mechanic I'm using said that the kit I'm buying must have the flywheel retaining bolts with it. Are these the bolts that are listed? (It does say flywheel bolts in the listing, but it's all double-dutch to me!)

Seriously, see if you can find some examples of someone changing from SMF to DMF on Briskoda. I read a fair bit and I can't recall ever seeing it.

That's because they're all big-powah VRS modders, OP is fettling a bog-stock PD100 and doesn't need to worry about torque. A PD100 SMF would be a massive downgrade on a VRS, it's a cast iron dustbin lid.

I'm not talking about a subset of the mk1 Fabia forum, I mean the whole of Briskoda.

I've never seen it. That doesn't mean it hasn't happened, but I was merely suggesting that the OP has a quick search.

There are quite a few VRS guys who changed to an SMF setup, couldn't stand it and swapped back to a DMF, unless you're running a pretty big turbo it's just not worth risking scrapping the (very expensive) gearbox with a lightweight SMF.

The Castrol Syntrans Transaxle Fluid 75W-90 has helped me on badly gearboxes. Also VW Camper/Transporter with bad 5. gear. Bad construction in some go them. Simpel syncro match. Better in later model that mine, anyway VW changed to a normal synkro.

Since the reverse also in problem, the problem is in the clutch mekanism I think. Some time I have right!

I have not study every comment in her, but in many cases this problem have cause in dry gear axle - the axle that goes in the senter of the clutch disk. In some situation I have loosen the gearbox an lubricate the axle an the problem was gone.

The hydraulic must bo ok to, but some mention that!

A little bit of an update on the replacement gearbox and DMF swap. I dropped off the gearbox (which I was told by the breakers was indeed JXY-coded) the new DMF/clutch kit and Skoda gearbox oil yesterday afternoon at my mate's garage and was told it would be fitted by this morning. Well, it was fitted but the opening line of the phone call I made before I picked it up made my heart sink "Well, it's in, but I had to swap a load a parts over from your old box as nothing was the same"

As soon as I drove the car, I knew something was off. First gear 'hops' if you drop it into gear when stationary. 2nd crunches like the old box, 3rd and 4th gear pops out! The breakers have offered to collect the old box and supply a new one, but want me to get my friend to adjust the linkage/s to see if that will help. Is this worth doing? Or has the gearbox had it?

Many thanks in advance

it's no good.

Thanks, Sep. I'd knew you'd put me out of my misery! I'm just off to take a long walk off a short pier! What bloomin' gearbox did they sell me? It's couldn't have been a JXY one, that's for sure! What's wrong with it?

Gutted for you mate :( Buying a used box is always a gamble unless it's from a car you knew.

Thanks, TMB. I've hit rock bottom. After sinking nearly £1400 into the car in parts (not to mention the 3k I paid for it as well) it's a bitter pill to swallow. Just don't know what to do now. I'm scared to even try another 2nd hand box, as they're so brittle. And yes, the oil was replaced. The standard stuff direct from Skoda.

Yes it's depressing. I've been in similar situations  Cars are money pits.

Amen to that, Brother! Does anyone know of a decent 'JXY' box for not a lot of money? : (

Breakers are inherently dishonest, sorry for your luck, these cars are getting old now so the chances of finding decent second hand parts like gearboxes are getting slimmer all the time.

Thanks, Sep. Should I try and get mine recon'd? One company I got a quote from wanted £1100!
