Need a few things

Featured Replies

hi all, new user here.

Car hasn't been running well, 54 1.4 Fabia, and now run into a few issues that i need some advice on.

1 - according to garage the clutch has gone, causing over revs when changing gears, and need a replacement. Where to buy one that fits the car? Garage price £215 for supplied and fitted.

2 - driver's side window is no longer winding in any direction. Garage has advised that the window switch is faulty. Need a replacement, best place to pick one up? £110 supplied and fitted.

Thank you for reading and any help.

Yes, the clutch price supply and fit does sound decent.

£110 for supply and fit a window switch is daylight robbery. It's a five minute job.

Is the engine 1.4 8 valve or 16 valve?

Honestly i may have misheard about it being the switch, perhaps it's the mechanism instead? He did mention the part was around £60.

The car is 16v

For the window switch, incredibly easy to replace yourself.

I'd leave the clutch to the professionals since it's a tricky job unless you have the facilities, that price seems very fair for supply and fit.

yeah, i dont have the skills or the tools to do a job like that.

ive seem some clutch kit prices range from £80 - 200, and i was quoted £160 for the clutch £55 for fitting. i'm thinking of getting a kit for about £100 and save some money... Some kits are available at Eurocarparts..

Yeah, so how are you going to get the gearbox out without skills or tools or a four-poster?

If it's the window regulator then £110 supply and fit is fair enough, it's a tricky job.

Get it all done, mechanics 101 is way outside this forum's remit and we can't help you when it all goes tits up.

I believe he meant supply a 'bargain' ECP clutch to the garage who have quoted £55 fitting but £160 for the parts, rather than doing the labour himself? Saving on the parts cost.

£55 fitting for a clutch sounds astonishingly cheap to me, having done it myself recently, that's less than an hours labour round my way. I'd be embarrassed to say how many times as long as that it took me. The money you're saving there compared to any other garage means you'd be better off just letting them supply and fit, in my opinion.  At that price though, I'd be a bit worried about corner cutting.

However they've constructed the quote that's exceedingly good value and they are perfectly entitled to make a profit on the parts in order to stay in business, as you say the labour is absurdly cheap.

If the OP thinks he can save yet further money by supplying the parts then he's sadly mistaken, most garages will not entertain his business because they can't guarantee the parts.

If he wants it done, pay the quoted price right now otherwise they'll just tell him to get lost when they're busier, this is a quiet time of the year and they're doing him a favour.

Yep that's what i meant. And since ECP have a 30% off this weekend which includes clutch kits, i would be a moron not to.

Actually, they mentioned the price of parts separately from fitting and gave me the option of sourcing my own.

On the topic of clutch kits, ECP have 3 different fitments for the car. Which is the most accurate version? I've added a screenshot of the options.

Thanks.

Thing is with ECP is they put the price up to offer the discount code, so sometimes its not too much cheaper... however if money is tight you have to do what you need to keep rolling.

Unless im mistaken ECP usually offer budget  to Oem quality parts like you have put in your post.  Check fitment details cross ref part numbers.   The valeo would do you fine quality wise.  Just check the prices elsewhere and dont be lulled too much by ECP discount codes.

Stick the word transmech in the search box, there are some things worth reading.

I think if there's a GSF near you I'd be tempted to buy one of their 'Premium' clutch kits, which for your car appears to be (check by putting reg no. in) their part number 189VG0550 for £123.60.  Put in the discount code MRC50 and that halves.

ECP is like a 5 min drive compared to GSF, who I've never hear of btw, have a store about 20ish mins away by car. Including the 50% code... jesus, that makes it a stonking deal. Worth it! It seems the premium is a Luk brand...

Now to check it it definitely fits into the car.

Is the original part number 6Y0198141 for the clutch kit?

  • Sponsor

Nope, that appears to be for the 8 valve 1.4.

Not sure how to look up if there's part number for a genuine kit for the 16v.

Right, called the local Skoda dealer regarding part information and they were supposed to call me back...

Anyway, found this website which contains information on part number for different engine types. So for the 1.4 16v bbz engine i would be looking at the Sachs 3000.951.703.

Searching for this led me to this website which lists replacement parts and their numbers. Looks like the LUK, Valeo & the Westlake do fit the car which is swell as i can pick it up. Just have to confirm model numbers from the suppliers.

We'll see what tomorrow brings...
