Felicia Fun cold start issues

My Fun has an issue at Cold Start, basically she starts up but if i don't hold the revs with the pedal for a couple minutes she will stall, after shes warmed up a touch then she won't stall, but the idle will bit a bit 'erratic' until she has completely warmed up then she runs fine.

 

I have changed the Coolant temp sensor that didn't seem to help.

 

When i unplug the MAP sensor and start her cold, she won't stall and will hold revs at say 400rpm.

 

 

To me that says the MAP/Inlet temp sensor is the issue, but before i jump the gun and buy a new one, i was thinking that while the MAP is unplugged then the Fun might go into a sort of 'limp' mode that could sort of mask the actual problem (if it isn't the MAP sensor).

Tried spraying some carb-cleaner in and around the MAP and intake but didn't really spend much time on that...

 

 

Also when driving there is a bit of a petrol-like smell, but i noticed i have a hole in my exhaust so I'm wondering if she's over-fuelling or if its just the exhaust flow, mpg doesn't seem too bad to me though!

Having a VAG-COM interface ('cable') and diagnosing the engine could help a lot. Otherwise it's a trial & error job (aka changing parts blindly hoping to fix the issue).

Ah ok, I've invested in one so hopefully have that this week will give it a go!

 

For now I've cheated and adjusted the throttle cable so its always revving a tad, bodgy i know...

Not necessarily; I've known other cars where having the idle speed set too low, or the cable "slack" too tight would cause fluffiness or stalling when the engine was cold or "cool".

Ken, it's a bodge alright. DanoHosko admitted it. It was his choice for now.

A throttle cable set too tight results indeed in a hunting idle. But a cable too lax does nothing to idle speed on Felicia with injection. Yes, the accelerator pedal will have an unwanted play, but that's all.

Ok so scanned for Fault codes, did have one relating to the MAP sensor but i figured it was probably from when i unplugged the MAP and ran it so cleared that one, also have one for Airbag voltage or something.

 

Driven her a couple days now and rescanned, no new fault codes for the 01-Engine in the VCDS so guessing the previous MAP fault code was from when i unplugged it?

 

 

I was going to do the Throttle Body reset but need to register the VCDS, it's $99 to register which isn't the end of the world, worth it do we think?

 

Tomorrow i should be fitting new wheels, pop down to local exhaust place (mines rusting to pieces and i fancy a stainless one) then probably strip the throttle body and clean the hell out of it.

 

Got my cambelt/water pump/tensioners done for £200 the other day too, that was all inclusive, bargain i say!

Well I hooked up the VCDS Lite and checked the Coolant Temp Sensor and Air Inlet Temp sensor, both were reading 9.0°C when engine was cold which matches with the outside air temperature...

 

Definitely becoming easier to start now that the weather is warming up a touch, i was hoping it was going to be a temperature sensor somewhere as that makes the most sense to me but both of them reading the same says to me that they are both working, especially since the coolant sensor is new.

No fault codes on the 01 engine block.

 

Could it simply be the throttle body reset needing to be done? Odd because once warmed up she does idle nicely at around 800-900 rpm.

Looking like i'm gonna have to shell out the $90...

 

Any advice appreciated!
