I think the clutch slave has gone

Featured Replies

Went out for a drive .went to change gear and the clutch pedal didn't return.

As the car was move to be towed away we saw a puddle of fluid.  Recovery guy said it could be the slave cylinder.

Any ideas how big a job this is?

Its a 2004 fabia vrs

Undo a couple of bolts that hold it on. Bolt new slave cylinder in position. Undo a clip that holds the hydraulic line into the old slave. Pull out line, refit hydraulic line to new slave. Bleed. Check for leakage where line goes in after a day or two, replace seal if there's any leakage.

That's based on the 5-speed 02T, not sure if there's any difference for the vRS box.

Big difference, it's a concentric slave so the gearbox has to come off.

Oh, bummer!

Indeed, check it isn't a split hose first.

Bugger. Is the hose easy to see?

I wouldn't spend out on clutch parts unless I wanted to change to an SMF as part of a major tuning programme (stage 2 or above) until I had the box off and could see how worn the friction plate was, and whether or not the DMF looked overheated.

Its got nearly 150000miles on it and no idea if its ever been done. I don't really want to be paying for 2 lots of labour if the clutch goes soon. At the moment I have no plans to tune it.

If it's at 150k and you have no plans to tune it (perhaps wise on an engine and auxiliaries with that mileage) then you won't go wrong with fitting a standard dual mass flywheel and a new clutch. Sachs get the best reviews.

Had you noticed any signs of slip recently?

None what so ever.  But I'd rather spend a little extra now than more later

Fair enough, piece of mind that way isn't there.

All done. They said the old clutch was close to the end of its life and showed my partner the old one. So looks like we done the right thing

Cheers for the update.
