High Oil usage 1.2 tsi 105 Petrol

I have a 60 plate Fabia 1.2 tsi estate 105 with just shy of 43k on the clock. Had the car since January 2016 and I cannot fault it but the oil usage is surprising me having had Japanese cars in the past. I am topping up every 2-2.5 thousand miles.

 

Is this normal it seems a hell of a lot to me :o

 

The car has been well looked after with 1 owner and just under 31k on the clock and 5 main dealer stamps when I got it. I had it serviced in November 2016 with full oil change etc with 40,500 on clock. Yesterday I checked oil and it was very low :sweat:

So topped up pretty sharpish with the castrol edge I got last year, £50 a pop at my local garage :dull: and mileage is 42,704.

 

The car isn't leaking oil just guzzling it for fun it seems,at this rate I will be buying 4 litres of oil every year excluding the full oil change on it's annual service.

 

I can see my old Mitsubishi and Civic 1.8 vti :D at me. They barely used a drop.

 

I'm keen to hear the thoughts of members who have had similar issues or is this just the way it is with this engine?

 

 

Best forget that Castrol Edge 5w 30 FS Long Life Oil (VW504 00),

do an Oil & filter change and put in 5W 40 FS (VW502 00) ASDA's or anyones will do as long as to VW 502 00

So £20 oil & £5-£9 for a Filter, and a new sump plug.

 

(Keep that Long Life Castrol Edge that cost so much for some other use but not in your engine.)

 

Do not overfill, then monitor the Oil usage from the Oil Change, 

Know where the level is cold, then checking oil once up to Operating Temp, if it uses oil still then you will need to take some more serious / expensive actions.

 

PS

Did you check the Oil level both Cold & Hot when you got the car, and since, and how long ago before now when you found the low 

oil level.  (The check after the service to be sure the correct quantity of oil was in, not too much or too little.)

Was that a cold check or as described in the owners manual.  If the owners manual says 'Warm' that is a translation error, 

it is 'Operating Temperature' so at least after 5 miles, better 10 miles, nit sitting ticking over for 5 minutes,....

Some VW engines are well known for oil consumption,our 'other' car is a 2002 Polo 1.4 16v and it always uses oil (we bought it at 51,000 miles - full service history),it does not drink overly much but I always check the level every 2 weeks or before a long journey (sorry I have never worked out the actual consumption as it is not too horrific).

I agree with offski -  I always use 5w40 (quite often tripleQX and normally a Mann filter from eurocartarts) and always keep a 2 litre can of oil in the boot for holiday top ups (which I keep refilled from a 5 Ltr can bought when good price :))

Will get that for starters then look around when I'm out and about for something cheaper. If I look for the spec  5W 40 FS (VW502 00) Awayoffski it will be good to use no matter how cheap it is.

 

To be honest with the oil checks I hold my hands up, I blame the Japanese cars I have driven for years :biggrin:. It made me complacent as they used so little oil. I never checked the levels after the service as the garage used comes with a good recommendation (will do in future).

 

I'm assuming they replaced the old with new oil to the correct level. The mileage at service was 40,500 and when I checked oil yesterday it was below the minimum level :sweat: and mileage was 42,704 ( I make that 2,204 miles to go from full to dangerously low).

 

I had only been out on a local trip of around 3 miles when I checked the oil on return. So I guess it was nearer operating temperature than stone cold. Excuse my ignorance but is there much of a difference when checking oil hot or cold? Being a layman or fool delete as necessary :D, the oil when hot would be more runny than cold but will that affect the level?.

 

Having overfilled the oil on a previous car I tend to add it a bit gingerly now to avoid that problem.

 

I have made a note to check the oil now once a month and stock up on oil. Will follow your advice YS53 and keep a litre or two in the car so I never get caught short.

Have just read owners manual and I quote: The oil consumption may be as much as 0.5 L per 1000 km (621miles) depending on your style of driving and the conditions under which you operate the vehicle.

 

So as I have driven around 12,000 miles since ownership that equates to around 10L of oil based on those figures. I have only bought 4l of Castrol Edge as mentioned, plus whatever amount the garaged put in on service. So that based on the owners manual is well within bounds :biggrin: phew.

 

Just using the oil I saw for £30 will save a few quid and I'm sure I can get the price down further with a bit of shopping around.

Found out new information in owners manual

Try and find a vw 502 that is 100% synthetic, as that one is a blend.

Halfrauds are selling oil with big discounts at the moment, theyre one of the few people who stock 0/30W for my Landrover, its currently on sale at trade price!

 

Alternatively...

 

If you go to National Tyres then they will do an oil (synthetic) and filter change for £40 while you wait.  I do the latter for my Skoda every 5000miles and they use recommended low ash oil.   

Just go to ASDA and buy 5w 40 Full Synthetic to VW 502 00,.  that is as fully synthetic as 1.2 TSI Euro 5 requires.

Proper oil produced by an oil producer & in an ASDA brand Container.

What do you think of castrol advising 0w 30 ?

I think that is as Toyota did when Euro 5 Petrol Engines were introduced in 2010 and the MPG's were well off the Euro 4, 

so they went 0w 30 from 5w 30. 

 

Castrol can advise what they like, Skoda / VW advice 5w 30 FS LL VW 504 00 and that is what suits them for Fleet users & Variable Servicing.

Fixed Servicing Euro 5 Petrol TSI's in the UK and VW 502 00 is just fine.

No Long Life oil, just longer lived engines.    Other world regions, temps etc, different story  maybe. 

 Make your own choices, but people are talking excessive oil users.

Check the pcv valve has not broken off (common). Its a small plastic valve that plugs into a rubber grommet at the rear of the cam cover towards the gearbox end. Its connected via a rubber pipe to the filter  airbox. Often you'll find it hanging down loose. Oil leaks out the cam cover if it's missing.

 

 

 

I fit all the criteria for fixed service, and my car 1.2 tsi 86hp burns some oil should I stick with 5w-40 ? Or try 0w-40 since i've heard it is a little better for frequent cold starts and hills

Why not just try it and see for a year?  or less if you start using even more oil!

 

5w 40 FS (VW 502 00) is perfect for UK climate frequent cold starts and helping reduce oil use.

Where im from, never under 8ºC never above 30ºC.
I've heard mobil 1 0w-40 to be a very good oil and superior so most 5w-40 but what do I know.
5w-40 has helped me with reducing the "oil burning" tho.

Maybe give it an engine flush, drop the oil, put in a new filter and oil and then add some Archoil AR9100 or AR9200?  Should see a difference with either of those additives, and it also protects your cold starting better.  Seems to solve a lot of oil peoples problems anyway, especially the americans with their 160k mile hondas etc

Some of us remember when Slick 50 use was common.

A Honda engine might well be very good at 160,000 miles due to good build tolerances and quality control.

As for a VW Group TSI with crap rings, scrapers, chain tensioners and the likes, Oil Modifiers are likely a waste of money.

Just but 4 litres more oil instead.

I can’t comment on tolerances as I don’t know them, although I do know that the old days of Toyota production system Vs British leyland are long gone.  I didn’t use slick50 (although it was a poor product) and I don’t have any data on oil additives to TSi engines, hence just a suggestion.

 

I do know my diesels run a lot better from using Archoil fuel additives.

Does it run smoother and feel better?

Did your car use oil excessively and has it stopped doing that now?

Which oil are you using that you then put this additive into.
