312mm front disc con version.

Featured Replies

Hi folks.  I'm going ahead with a remap at some point this year, and I'm also going to be updating the brakes.  I have a 140CR 4x4 (2012) yeti, that seems to have 288mm brakes on the front.  I need to replace both pads and discs this year, mainly down to corrosion, rather than wear.  I've read that the 170CR engines came with 312mm brakes as standard.  Is it possible to convert to these brakes?  I'm hoping it is just going to be be the caliper carrier that needs swapping, and not the calipers themselves.

Anyone done this conversion before?

Cheers

Andy

I've done this conversion on a 2011 Octavia Scout (Ø288 to Ø312), as you say it's just a case of swapping the carriers over.

I would assume the Yeti will be exactly the same, hopefully someone with a Yeti will confirm.

Discs and carriers needed and pads/calipers the same as for the 140/1.8 easy and relatively cheap-well worth it!

The 170 brakes are just the best.  Although the guys above have given good advice, ask 'The Plumber'  as he is the expert on Yeti brakes.

Keep on stopping!

Regards.

I don't suppose anyone knows the part numbers for the larger carriers do they?  Before I go and confuse the local parts place!

Cheers

Looks right to me - if you google "5N0615125 312mm" you'll find lots of references to them - used on lots of cars across the VAG range.

I've done the conversion on 3 cars before (an Ibiza, and two Passats) and it's well worth it.

Could always get some uprated pads at the same time...

That's a great little resource, thanks for sharing!  It does look like the right parts, I'll get on to my local parts place now and see what they can get hold of.  Thanks!

Having had an advisory for break wear on a recent MOT, sort of makes doing this modification a no-brainer :)

Worth checking Ebay, and stuff for sale on forums. They get shifted on fairly regularly and used ones will be fine.

Something like ebay item number 182450057921, but please check part numbers first

I had put this off for ages, but this conversion is going to happen now, because:

1.  I need to put some new pads and discs on now.  Wear on the stock ones (pads) has been ace (just shy of 50k miles!).  Can anyone recommend some pads and discs that work well from cold, and are suitable for enthusiastic driving on the road.  No track days etc.  I don't mind having to replace them more often than 50k miles too  if the stopping power is greater!

2.  Does anyone know if the 312mm disc conversion will fit under my steel 16 inch winter wheels?

Andy

I used Brembo discs from ECP and callipers pads and holders from

 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-MK5-MK6-Passat-3C-Audi-A3-8P-genuine-brake-caliper-left-right-312mm-/142476127743?hash=item212c3d2dff

as at the time it was the same price as holders and pads and I wanted to paint the callipers red. though since then they have upped the price for UK

Having said that these

 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OEM-carrier-front-brake-caliper-support-bracket-312mm-VW-Golf-MK5-MK6-Audi-A3-8P-/142476141556?hash=item212c3d63f4

seem to be a good price for the holders on their own.

So I'm still on stock pads..........

No idea about 16" wheels.

If that are the size that were fitted to the 170 then yes they will fit wth 16" wheels

Thanks for the links.  The calipers/carriers seem like a pretty decent price, even if it has gone up recently!

That's great, thanks for confirming that!

You don't need to change calipers just frames pads and discs.

I use EBC Yellow pads front and rear on mine, they are excellent from cold.

I've used other pads before now on other cars, the best performing were Carbotech XP10s but when cold you'd have got better performance from blocks of wood.

16" wheels are fine.

By the way, if fitting uprated pads, check if there are any bedding-in procedures to be followed, and follow them. Long straight roads with no following traffic may be needed ;)

Finally had a couple of hours free yesterday, with the aim of replacing the discs and pads all round, and sneakily putting the bigger ones on the front.  The rears stumbled at the first hurdle, can't get the carrier bolts undone.   They are in an awkward place, that I really need the car higher off the ground than my little jack and stands can reach.  The fronts were relatively easy though.  Apart from getting the old discs off the hubs.  Both fronts were corroded in place, and ended up needing several belts with a hide mallet to free.  Bit of wire brushing and some ceratec grease and that shouldn't happen again.

I've driven about 150 miles now bedding the brakes in, and the increase in disc size seems to have made them a lot sharper.  It could be down to the new material on the pads, but they feel better to me.  The first couple of stops were a bit alarming mind, the braking was very poor until I had done a few hard stops from 60mph....

I also failed on my first attempt to get the rear carriers off :D

Had to get the car quite high off the ground, and find a combination of bit, extension bar, and something with sufficient leverage that would 1) fit around the suspension/driveshaft etc and allow me to get hold of it, and 2) provide enough torque to get the very tight bolts out!

I have not looked at the detailed specs for my car,but does the 150ps Yeti already have these 312mm discs or were they only fitted to the 170ps?

I realise im resurrecting an old thread but hoping someone can answer a question.

What is the benefit in adding the larger disks from a 170 but keeping the same 140 calipers?

The 170 had 16" calipers as opposed to 15" on the 140 so also larger pads.

Without the larger calipers I cant see any benefit in fitting larger disks as your 140 calipers are still using the same surface area with the larger discs as they did with the smaller so there would be no benefit without the larger calipers / pads as its these larger calipers that provide the extra stopping power not the size of the discs as well or am i missing something?

The calipers are the same but the caliper mounts will be different otherwise the calipers would not fit to the larger discs.

Dont know why I put 15" and 16" calipers...this is obviously not the case (I was reading about wheels at the time :-))

I thought the 170 had larger calipers than the 140?
