Spare Wheel Compatability

Featured Replies

OK, please excuse my ignorance on wheels here!

I've just picked up a vRS estate with the Gemini wheels, and am looking for a spare wheel (was bought from stock, not ordered, and doesn't have the space saver*).  I previously owned a Mazda 6, which I got a spare for from eBay, and I still have that wheel, as the car went to WBAC and I wasn't giving them anything for free!

I'm trying to work out if that Mazda wheel would be compatible as a spare - after all, not bothered about looks or perfect handling, it's that or a space-saver anyway!

It's 17" not 18", but the tyre is 215/50 instead of 225/40, so the total diameter is pretty much the same - just a couple of mm out.  What I'm not sure about is the width / clearance - obviously don't want it fouling the brakes or anything.

Also the diameter of the lugholes... I can't find specs for the Mazda wheel (should it be on the wheel somewhere?), but just from measuring they seem pretty much the same.  I guess I could easily find this out by trying!  Not sure if the centre-bore would necessarily be the same?!

*Back to the space-saver... I'm thinking of calling the dealer and seeing if they can throw one in for the £100 price as an extra (instead of £300 as a post market accessory).  Reckon I've got any chance?

You'll need a wheel with a Stud pattern 5X112, Centre bore 57.1mm ( Double check That ) I'm not sure about the ET and if you have the Big Front Brakes (344mm Discs ) you'll need nothing smaller than a 17" Wheel to clear the callipers on the front. 17" tyre size is 225/45X17 as it's the same radius as 225/40X18.

You can get a 6.5x17" steel for around £50 from somewhere like Oponeo and stick a 205/50 tyre on it.

It it will be better than the standard vRS space saver if you have to do any distance with it. And it will fit under the boot floor.

Mazda's has stud pattern 5x114.3. Also the offsets of Mazda rims are wrong (often ET55-60), so I think you will get a hard time to make them fit.

Possibly need to keep an eye on this, in case I want a spare for my new Octy. Got 19"s on it though, which rather limits the possibilities

It doesn't matter which wheels you have. Just do as flybynite above here says, such a spare will fit. Spare doesn't have to be exactly the same as the ordinary wheels on the car, as long as the circumference are approx equal.

Can you get a 17" steel wheel to fit an Octavia Vrs ? Think the correct tyre size  for a 17" rim is 225/45X17 not 205/50X?

I will stand corrected though.................

Pity you weren't a bit closer as I've got a 17 inch space saver wheel/tyre in near mint condition which I bought for my recently departed Octavia Estate car, it was originally meant for an Audi A4 Estate but fits the Octavia perfectly, will probably advertise it on Gumtree locally to sell it off. I wouldn't think it would be that hard to find something suitable in your own area as pretty much any VW Group wheel should fit your car. With this wheel I just took the foam bit out of the boot and put it straight into the large wheel shaped space that left, an old blanket or similar to wrap it will stop it rattling. I think too that it doesn't matter too much if your spare wheel is a fraction larger or smaller than the standard wheels just so long as it physically fits onto your car, you shouldn't be running around for that long with a narrow space saver wheel anyway.

Yes, 17" steel wheel is no problem (17"alloys are in fact the standard factory size for pre-FL Vrs, in Norway though).

No problem with 205/50 on a 6,5 - 7 " wide rim. I have it for my winters. 205 width suits better in the spare wheel well.

6.5 x17" 5x112 steel et38 and et50 (et38 gives more brake clearance and leaves wheel similar distance to the arch as the 7.5" et51) available HERE among other places

205/50 17 89W is an approved tyre size for the 162kw vRS (have not checked the 230 but can't see why it would not be the same.

225/45 is the normal tyre size but 205/55 will sit better under the boot floor. 225 is also a bit of a squash on a 6.5" steel rim.

It may be a bit smaller than standard but would I feel much happier on that than the skinny space saver 125/70

205/55 16 is the standard spare fitted to non-vRS even if they have 225 fitted as regular tyres.

Do these have to be the proper Skoda ones or are there other alternatives?

True...I had a hunt on eBay last night, and can see some space savers that are available.  Not sure the wheel well in the boot will take a fill size wheel though

Full size wheel will fit in terms of diameter. The depth may cause a slight hump in the floor though. You could raise the surrounding floor slightly to make it all level if you are handy at carpentry :)

As for tools, it's best to get the kit that fits inside the spare wheel in a polystyrene insert, but all you really need are a wheel brace and decent jack. Maybe a tool to remove the bolt caps.

I keep a power bar with socket, narrow nose pliers and various other bits in mine, as well as the standard kit. (I specified a spare as an option when new).

Depends what you call full size. As above, the diameter is no problem they are all the same give or take (they have to be)

A 6.5" steel with a 205 tyre fits below the boot floor comfortably. A 7" or 7.5" alloy with a 225 tyre will lift the boot floor carpet by about 1/2"

Spare wheel all sorted, thanks to the very helpful AllanDJ!

One remaining question - if you get the space saver from Skoda, does it have a bolt to hold it down?  On my old Mazda, the bolt was there even though it didn't come with a wheel, but not the case with the Octavia.

I'd quite like one, just for safety - don't want to squash the dog in the event of an accident!  If there's a standard part, that'd be great, otherwise I guess it's a case of getting some sort of T-shaped bolt and improvising?

Doesnt come with the bolt.

Just buy the correct bolt from a Skoda dealer, or Superskoda.

You need number 15 -

bolt for spare wheel mounting
